by , 3 months agoOpen Question

i do not want to put any of my details at risk of hacking by criminals who might use them for identity fraud, but i want to use genes reunited and therefore need to subscribe by card. would a pre-paid card avoid any chance of this problem?

Hi irit
Most internet buying is far safer than the press would have us believe. I do a lot on my buying on the internet, use my credit and debit card regularly, do all of my banking and investing that way, and have never had any problems. You are far more at risk giving your card to a waiter to pay for a meal, or having Postman Pat steal a letter before it ever gets to you.
Always look for the Padlock symbol when purchasing, that at least gives you some protection by indicating that the site is using some form of encryption technology. And never makes purchases in an internet cafe.

Bonz is quite right, irit.

I think it's much safer to use your cards online where there are usually several layers of security than to give the details to someone over the phone or hand your card over in a shop or restaurant.

Or you could use Paypal. Once your account is set up, you don't have to give your card details to a seller when you make a transaction.

Bonz is correct it is safer than a restaurant but your details will NEVER be safe on the internet

All it takes is one crafty SQL injection attack by a good hacker or someone on the inside compromising a database and as most of it is farmed out to India and Pakistan I wouldnt trust anyone - would you?

They cant even play cricket without cheating and you want to give them any info about yourself - hence why its a good choice with UK only call centre organisations - far safer.

But on the internet if its financial and internet facing it is inherently never going to be safe not now not ever...

there is always an element of risk when buying on the internet but is getting better BUT there is always a risk. One thing I personally do when purchasing is looking to see if it has an SSL certificate etc... keep your details safe, do not save passwords on computer or select the "remember me" tab...

The internet is generally safe to use for payments by card as the encrypting of the card details the user types in is better than in other regions of the world. Multilevel protection is provided by the e-commerce and banking authorities and it all goes on transparently in the background when the webframe uses a SSL certificate and the padlock symbol is often seen in the border of the browser window. A secure server is connected to for the webframe input data and activity as often indicated by the s suffix to http in the webpage address. Hint - always use upper case characters for the alphabetic details of the card and the account or delivery addresses. Using a prepayment card means that only the amount of cash in the card account from time to time is at risk of loss if the card details are misused and remember that for most cards only those which are not pound or GBP denominated accounts can be used on the internet and in shops and cash machines in Britain as the pound ones are primarily for use when travelling abroad, almost all of the cards incurring currency conversion charges.

Well said Ourlord, one of the important things to do is make usernames and passwords as difficult as possible, mixture of numbers, letters, CAPS etc..
