Hi ni818, and welcome to the forum.

You can ask your electricity provider to come and check your meter for you, but I believe they will charge you a hefty fee if they can't find a fault with it. You could contact your provider to find out what their charges are for checking the meter.

I would get in touch with them and ask them to check it.

I think you should do a reading of your own meter from time to time and write it down in a notebook or on a chart and date it.You could phone your supply company and ask for them to come and check the meter, the reading tarrif of the meter etc, and make sure it is documented properly by the supply company. Ask them to send you their reading and your useage etc in writing after their man calls to check it. One time my bill was sent to me hugely in excess of what I was expecting. I had to pay it all over and above my "current" useage. I had had a meter when family growing up, then changed to Direct Debit and ordinary meter. It turned out that their record of my status was wrong and they failed to inform me my useage had gone up so much over months. When checking, they found I was still down as a token meter on my records and it had got muddled up.They had the tarrif of he token meter set too low and then I got billed all at once when they looked again when i changed to Direct Debit. There should be a low rate call or a free phone number on your yearly letter from them, or you could get it by googling I'm sure. You should tell them you are paying more than you think you should. You might even get some back!

I believe the meter is there property and therefore surely they are duty bound to call and read it from time to time even if it is a pre payment meter,I used to have mine looked at once every 12 to 18 months and wasn't charged or them calling. Also pre paid meter's are provided as a means of people budgetting carefully who can't really take the chance of getting huge bills, so it is in keeping with the philosophy of choice for customers, that they should check at their own expense if you are worried.

Hi ni818 ...

I attended a 'Fuel Poverty' meeting at our local CAB this week and pre-payment meters were mentioned as point of concern because of the way that they are regulated and always set in favour of the electricity company. To be fair, ?50 a month does not seem excessive for electricity use in the colder, darker weather but if you have genuine concerns for the meter's calibration here, perhaps a call to your local CAB to may help .... most of them now have a specific energy advisor now and there is a tremendous amount of help available particularly if your 'fuel' bills ( gas, electricity and water bills are included ) are causing financial concern.
