we get child tax credit and working tax credit with a baby of 4 months old we rent privately do we qualify for an allowance?
Hi annalea and welcome to the forum.
When you say 'allowance', do you mean Housing Benefit, that is help with your rent? If so you need to ring your local council, ask to be put through to the benefit section and ask for a 'quick benefit calculation' to be done over the phone. You will need to quote your monthly rent, details of the property, exactly how much tax credits you receive, and your income via pay. You will also need to state that you are a private tenant as local housing allowance rates will then apply. If they suggest that you are eligible, ask for or collect a housing benefit form and return without delay as the eligibility, and payment, always runs from the Monday following receipt of the claim. This assessment will also cover consideration of council tax benefit, if any.
I assume that you are also in receipt of Child Benefit for your baby? This is important if you don't receive it but also because you need to receive it to qualify for a child premium on your housing benefit assessment although they disregard the money as income.
I hope this helps!

would we be entitled to the cold weather allowance?
I think not annalea as you have to be in receipt of certain income related state benefits apart from tax credits, the link below gives you more info here:
