My brother in law unfortunately had his car stolen last week from his driveway. He has maximum no claims, no points on his license etc.
I know of someone who had the same happen and they then were refused insurance and are now having to pay an astronomical rate for insurance.
Will my brother in law have the same problem? If so, what should he do and are there companies that you would recommend?
All has been reported to the police, and they said that usually they find them but has been over a week now - probably in Eastern Europe of the far east now!
The thief broke in to the front door and took the keys - would have taken more if he wasnt disturbed - will wait and see what the insurance company says and if they are unfair i think i will vent on here plus tweet / facebook ...they need to treat customers fairly!
Was your brothers no claims bonus protected?
My only thought on this is that the circumstances of the theft are taken massively into account and if someone is actually refused cover, then it may suggest 'dubious' circumstances surrounding previous claims experience.
Obviously, your brother in law reported the theft to the police, he has a police incident number and the matter is on file and the car may well turn up. Future cover can only be seen but I doubt whether there would be certain insurance companies that would respond more favourably to this kind of claims experience.
