We are now on a water meter and I gather that we could pay rather a lot of money if a pipe burst outside of our house.

Insurances cover unexpected losses. If you are concerned, it may help to give yourself a 'what if' scenario, e.g. " The pipe burst under the front gate, am I covered?" Examine the policy wording, and see if the cover you thought protected you, would actually pay out. Also, phone the company, and record date, time and representatives name in your diary (just in case!) to get an answer, if in doubt.

You may decide that a risk may not be worth protecting- that is entirely your choice.
