Hi gavin, I have exactly the same problem..rural area, and its not worth upgrading the line just for me (huh!), and there's only bt that serves my area. What's infuriating is that I get 0.8 g whereas a friend in a different part of the country gets 16 on a bad day and I have to pay the same!! Mobile broadband doesn't work in my area either. Got no solution I'm afraid, but if you find one let me know :)
