Have a look at...
1) Income protection (aka permanent health insurance):

This will pay out a monthly amount should you become unable to work or redundant.
2) Critical illness cover:

This will pay out a lump sum on the diagnosis of various serious conditions.
BTW Don't just try to cover your rent - think about your other basic outgoings. Food, electricity, gas, water, telephone, broadband, council tax, contents insurance etc. all need to be covered. Plus if you're redundant you may need to travel to get to interviews.
Also - have a look at your employer's cover for you. You might be entitled to a large redundancy payout or full pay for the first year you are too ill to work. This should be covered under the redundancy policy and sickness policy at work.
