It does necessarily need to be a city you have already visited or lived in but a place that you aspire to live in.
I'll stick to the Country life CS no desire whatsoever to leave my lovely home and friends to live in the City. It's so friendly where I live without people intruding but I find the City is so crowded and can't wait to get home again. Obviously it's nice to look round the lovely shops in Hull which are the same as anywhere else but no thank you Country life is for me.
I agree with Sabre, no desire to leave my lovely rural home, but there are cities that I have enjoyed visiting. We had lovely times in Barcelona, Amsterdam and Brussels.
Interestingly, we found Paris less fascinating.
Oh I don't know CS, I love London now that I don't work there any more, but when I was there every day I didn't really appreciate it. Would really like to visit Rekjavik, but wouldn't want to live there
Shangri-la.
Does it have to be a real place?
Try Bled in Slovenia.
Went there in 1990. It's lovely!
I think fruiters has been there mind you she has bled quite a few victims!
>;o)
Yeah Slovenia is nice place as is Slovakia and Croatia as long as you keep to the coast and avoid the major cities.
Having thought a little bit more about your question CS I must say a visit to Rome and Sorrento was very beautiful and one of the nicest places I have been to abroad. Another was West Berlin so different from East Berlin or it was when I was there. The wall was up then so you had to go through check point charlie to get to the other side. The soldiers goose marched and you couldn't say a word or they wouldn't allow you to go through the check point.
Hi CS, I'm not a city lover at all, I was born in one, but grew up in a little village by the sea. But...if I absolutely had to choose a city somewhere, it would be San Francisco, one of my favourite places in the world, because it's such a small, friendly city.
Stary Smokovec....
Paradise!!!
Like fruitcake and sabre, I'm no city lover, but I went to University in Cardiff (over 20 years ago - before the barrage went up to create the Cardiff Bay stagnant pond...) and it seemed pretty decent as cities go - certainly less polluted than the likes of London, Birmingham, Manchester, etc and plenty of green spaces.
However, not sure if I'd live there given a free choice - the most pleasant place I've ever visited is Bled in Slovenia (albeit only when the weather's nice), as close to Shangri-la I can imagine: peaceful, calming, no hassle, beautiful scenery, decent locals, heaven on earth....
Sabre, I've only been to Bled once - on a group tour. Sadly when it comes to holidays I'm a shallow bloke who usually heads for the beaches (although the credit crunch has stopped that since 2008).
Oh no, I get bored on a beach after an hour or so, I love wandering around new places!
I wander about inbetween sunbathing spells....
I'm sensing your sunbathing spells might be somewhat longer than mine.........
You may be right.
I agree, Jazzj, I get bored after barely an hour, but I could walk along a beach quite happily for longer.
I can walk on a beach longer than I can bear to sit on it, but would much much rather wander around a city!
I've done my fair share of walking round cities as well - learned Istanbul like the back of my own hand a few years back and also learned that I never want to return (too many locals trying to rip you off and terrible atmospheric pollution - had to take many trips across the Bosphorus to get some fresh air). Maybe somebody should start a discussion - places you advise others NOT to visit! I submit Istanbul.
Good idea, thetruth, why don't you start a discussion on it? :-)
I did
Ah, I see you already have! Will have a think and join in later. :-)
Good idea thetruth. I have to say I've enjoyed everywhere I've been, although I found the volume of disabled beggars in Delhi, and the complete lack of personal space there a little disconcerting
I found the lack of personal space rather disturbing in Hong Kong, Jazzj.
Yep, that's another place but loved it there
I lived in York for a number of years after university, and I loved it! It is the place that I felt most at home, and only moved due to financial reasons :( But I would go back in a heartbeat if someone would pay for me!
But the 'suburbs' are a lot nicer than the city centre - I lived on a lovely tree lined road.... Ahhh the memories...
Hastings by the sea .... freshly caught fish and chip supper with a builder's mug of rosie .... boootful!
went on holliday to ireland stopped in bantry bay what a beautifull place ocean lovely walks and guinness yes i would to live there

Ooh Sabre, I used to live in Cottingham many years ago, I didn't know you were from around there! Have to say I really really miss living in town and find it quite scary being in the countryside on my own. I miss seeing people and cars and buses and..well you get the picture!
Gosh Jazzj that's the hospital Castle Hill which Stuart was having his treatment at and I have to go this week and next for some tests. My first husband's father and mother and brother and sister-in-law and family are and were in Cottingham and my life long friend is also from there. What a small world. You probably wouldn't know it now as it has expanded greatly but still keeps it's prettiness.
I haven't been there for ooh about twenty five years or so Sabre, so it's probably grown out of all recognition now. Used to like Beverley as well, and the odd trip to York..happy days:) Good luck with the tests x
There used to be a pub by the railway station that sold the most amazing hot roast beef sandwiches.
There was, not that I had the beef as I'm a veggie, but I remember having big yorkshire puddings there with a pint as a cheap lunch!
Yes, I remember the beer being good too, Jazzj. When my ex and I lived in Sheffield for a few months in the 70's it was a favourite Saturday trip out to go to Cottingham on the train for lunch and a pint or three.
