The trouble with static caravans is that you are stuck on a site all the year round and if you find you don't like the site, the people on either side of you or the area then you are in a sticky situation. The cost of the site fees are going up considerably every year and speaking to people who have them they are lovely at first but when the costs go up they are unable to afford them as it's like running two homes. I know some sites let you stay for the whole 12 month's but many only let you stay for 10 month's of the year.

I personally like to go touring and visiting different sites and meeting new people but that's only my choice.

I think you must stand back and look at the situation for a good few month's before making a final decision. Good luck to you.

Very pleased to help greydo. It is a big decision to make and a lot of money to spend. Have you had a holiday in a static? If you had one it might help you make a decision. Obviously it wouldn't be the one where you would be living but do take care and really look into it all. It looks wonderful in the summer with the birds singing and the sun shining but imagine it now or in the next few months.

We had a magical weekend with appreciative grandchildren, which is not much experience, so thanks for highlighting downfalls, and blessings!

Sabre's right about site fees increasing year on year, and you have no choice but to pay, you're a sitting duck. That said, you could rent it out when you're not planning on being their yourselves, and many sites will organise that for you (though they will of course generally rent theirs before yours!. I'd have a good look around a few sites, and try to talk to people who already own there to get a feel for how it is, as you can't really form a few after a short stay. I'd also consider the resale value, and what happens when its no longer usable.

On reflection, and reading your helpful advice, I do not like the "feudal" aspect of Static Caravan
Park owners. They really have the whip hand!

Also they deteriorate in value very quickly and when they get too old they want them taken off the site. It also depends on financial position as to whether you can afford the large outlay. Another point is that you get loads of unwanted visitors when you have a static. I have heard this said many times. With a tourer you can go anywhere you like away from the world.

I'd rather go to different places and meet different people given the choice Sabre

Oh dear feel a bit guilty now as if we have put you off but you did ask and we always give our honest opinion on this site. good luck greydo

Us too Jazzj that's how we met two of our favourite friends when we were caravanning in Norfolk a couple of year's ago and have had many meals and a holiday together since. They live about one and half hour's away and it's lovely to get together.

Sorry to put you off greydo, but you did ask! If you enjoyed staying in a caravan and don't want to have the hassle of towing your own, why not stick to renting one for wekk or so each year? Your £17k plus will last you a long time, and you'll have your pick of sites. Bear in mind that the grandchildren will grow and want different things in a site as they get older.

Hi sorry only just stumbled across this. Agree stay away from statics as the sites also say you have to have jobs done by there team!!! We had an old Tourer and put it on a site witha Pool in the country and paid so much a mnth to leave it there, yolu can do all year and it includes Storage for winter . Expect topay £ 80 to £ 1500 a yr!! But you not stuck then. We loved it xx Thenn you can just run up no packing etc . We stayed in Parc Farm Mold north Wales, just look online who allows this most now say caravan hAS to have papers to say its yours, and under 10yrs old. Good Luck xx
