Hello howie - this is a difficult one. The best thing to do is to get legal advice on this.
If there are others in a similar boat, you should pool togethet and get in touch with a good employment lawyer to see what your options are.
Saying that, companies can and do cut people's salaries; but have to provide a god reasn for it. It may not look like a good reason for you, but that does not mean that it is necessarily so.Thats why my suggestion of getting legal advice.

Thanks for your replies , just to enlighten you the company is making very good profits the only reason for possible forthcoming cut is that different sites have different pay rates so they would like to align them even though the jobs are different.
but the alignment will obviously be to the lowest pay ,what a suprise

The company I work for offered us a choice between a drop in salary or complusory redundancies for some of us. No one would've done well out of redundancies and jobs are few and far between here so we all agreed to the reduction. I'm not in a union but those that were didn't feel it was much use to them.

Hi howie1 and welcome to the forum.

It seems nowadays that the piper that pays the money calls the tune and if a salary reduction is the only way to survive, then it is understandable that they have to consider this. No business has unlimited funds or a licence to print money and we are in a recession, some may even say a depression.

I have worked for local government for twenty years and next month I lose my lease car. Last year we lost PMI and over the years all other benefits have vanished. But alas we are paid for by the public purse. I calculate that my loss of a lease car amounts to a 20% cut in salary as I will now, in the next month, have to buy one to simply do my job ( I am an essential car user ). I was actually given the option of signing a new contract to this effect or facing summary dismissal. No one is safe from the wraths of the recession and I can only say that if your company provide good supportive evidence, then there is little you can do.

My only complaint is that MPs, footballers and overpaid lawyers should be subject to the same!
