Are You Looking Forward To Watching Great TV This Holiday Break?

by , 4 months agoOpen Question

I was going to omit the word great tv because personally I don't believe that there is anything great for long periods any more. Before there was great TV drama, comedies and film adventures. Now it is nothing great but repeats which I do not count as original TV in which to captivate us all.

I agree CS, I don't think that 'great TV' exists anymore, all bar the odd flash of inspiration. I do not think TV is going to be a focal part of my holiday break, I have kind of become bored with it all, sad to say. I still have a passion for Emmerdale and the odd pychological thriller but I don't spend hours in front of the box, and Christmas will be no exception. Having said that, I do not want to miss the Christmas edition of Downton Abbey! Now that I do consider great TV!

I'm not a tv watcher at the best of times, CS, but like Snoops, I will be watching Downton Abbey, and, of course, Doctor Who!:-)

Downton Abbey is the one I won't be missing as the video is already set up for Christmas day and when the family have gone home and if it's not too late I shall be sat watching it. Looking through the programmes there isn't much else but I did see one of my favoutites is on "Little Woman" so will have tissues ready for that one. No old black and white Christmas Carol though!!!!

Ooh, Sabre, do you mean the old classic 1940s b&w one with Elizabeth Taylor playing Amy? I love that one!

by fruitcake, 4 months ago

Yes that's the one fruity. I love the old films. The Christmas Carol was on today but I was preparing a buffet for company so missed it. Missed seeing it when I looked through the TV Times.

I love the old films too, Sabre, I watched 'Miracle on 34th Street' on Christmas Eve, not the modern remake, but the old 1947 b&w one with Maureen O'Hara...I fell in love with it when I was a little girl, and it's still my favourite Christmas film ever. :-)

Oh dear was very disappointed with two programmes I had been so looking forward to. Downton Abbey was totally predictable and dull and Little Women was a remake and was so boring and just not the same as the old black and white one. I've taped Great Expectations so very glad to hear it's good.

The old 1949 b&w version of 'Little Women' was on too, Sabre, but I missed it.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one utterly bored by the Downton Abbey Christmas effort...it was truly dull, wasn't it?!

I can totally recommend 'Great Expectations' though!

Oh think I might cry now. Must have missed seeing it in the TV times. sniff sniff.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

Oh, don't cry, Sabre...just drop big hints that you'd like the dvd of it for next Christmas! ;-)

The television over Christmas has been awful! I enjoyed the Ab Fab episode but that's it.

I need to catch up on Great Expectations though as I have been hearing good things about it.

I don't watch tv much at all, but I did sit down to watch dr who, and have recorded Great Expectations. The children deleted Downton Abbey in error (supposedly) so have never seen. Oh and I watched some of Living with the Amish. Not watched soaps for donkeys years

I was very disappointed by the Downton Abbey Christmas episode, it had no surprises and was, quite frankly, boring.

Great Expectations, on the other hand, was truly magnificent! It's an adaptation, so not exactly true to the book, some of the characters are missing for instance, but it is so beautifully done, dark and scary, incredibly well-cast and well acted, faultless performances. Oh, and one of the fairly main characters is played by the great great great grandson of Charles Dickens!

Miss Havisham is like no other Miss Havisham you have ever seen before! It knocked Downton Abbey off its perch and trampled it into the ground!

And Dr Who was just fab! :-)

That makes me feel better, don't mind missing Downton so much now, and am looking forward to seeing Great Expectations even more! Now all I need it time to sit down long enough........

I sat and watched the whole of Great Expectations with just a break for a meal and it was absolutely fantastic. The acting was great and such a nice change from all the usual rubbish. So glad I had videoed it and even hubby enjoyed it and he doesn't watch the television much at all. I shall watch it again later on in the year.

by Sabre, 4 months ago

I still haven't found time Sabre, but its on my list of things to do :)

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

I finally caught up on Great Expectations and it was fabulous. I expect it is even better than the new film adaptation due out later this year!

by Summer, 4 months ago

I'm still looking for the time.........

by Jazzj, 4 months ago

Summer and Sabre...am so glad you enjoyed Great Expectations as much as I did, it was fab, wasn't it!

Summer, I've been thinking the same thing about the new film of it out later this year. I was looking forward to it, especially to seeing Helena Bonham Carter (who I love!) play Miss Havisham...but how will she outdo Gillian Anderson's one?! She was sensational!
