Do any of you keep the postage stamps of your Christmas cards?

by , 5 months agoOpen Question

I do and have faithfully for years, instructed the familt to cut off the stamp leaving a good margin of paper round the stamp, before they discard the envelope into the paper bin. However, i do wonder if there is still much interest or use in doing so. I usually post the all to Marie Curie charity in jnuary after all the festivities.I must check again to ensure they would want them and also find out if other charities want them. People hand ne there bunle of saved stamps to put in with my own, sometimes I am inundated. Also what do you all do with your birthday and Xmas cards?

I used to give the stamps to a charity Instinct but don't know anyone who takes them now. The Christmas cards I usually take to one of the Supermarkets as they recyle them.

Other than putting in the paper recycling bin which takes all manner of stuff like newspapers etc, are xmas cards more selectively sought after for recycling on their own just s xmas cards?

I save the stamps for our local hospice, and the Christmas cards go to another charity which uses them to make picture books for children in developing countries. They collect items throughout the year and fill boxes in November which are transported by volunteers.

They welcome just about anything you can think of, from scraps of material for making things like pencil cases for the kids, pens, pencils, small toys - even the crappy little things that come out of crackers - sample size toiletries like the ones I always liberate when we stay in hotels. I love contributing to this as I just hate anything being wasted!

That sounds a very good idea Feline. I shall contact the hospice and ask them as I have lots of material and wool etc. as well as the Christmas cards.

I collect used stamps for The Meningitis Trust who send an envelope for collection and despatch. There is still a market for used stamps internationally. It seems to be something that kids cannot be bothered to do these days preferring their computers. It's a pity because collecting stamps taught me a lot about geography, history and even politics as I traced why country names have changed.

Hi instinct, Oxfam are more than happy to take stamps.

I recycle all my cards. Our council provides all householders with containers for recycling all sorts of items, cards go in one of them.

The local authority I work for always used to cut off and save every stamp that came into the building ... there were piles of them every day ... but I understand that practice has ceased now. I wonder what value there is in millions of routinely used stamps any more?
