I have a lot of repairs owing to me by the company landlord - can I withold rent if the landlord does not fulfil their duties?
Oh Lana I have seen this situation so many times and unless the repairs are actually endangering safety or health, then landlords seem to get away with a lot!
I agree with LP, the CAB would be a good start and may even offer initial representation in the first instance. Otherwise go to your local authority and ask to speak to someone in Housing about your rights as a private tenant. They can be really helpful in cases like this. Lastly, if the repairs are causing danger to body and health, you can always contact the Health and Safety Executive for advice. I had a case recently where a gas safety check had not been done for five years and the gas appliance had to be 'red taped' as dangerous as a result. The HSE had the power to shut down the rental agency within 24 hours and as such movement was very rapid indeed.
Sorry to hear about your nightmare landlord. Have you tried the citizens advice bureau I think they can help with things like that? It's probably worth looking at your rent contract too to see what it says about repairs or keeping your house in a livable condition.
Hi Lana, LP and Snoopy have given you wise advice here.
The CAB is definitely the best way to go.
Do be careful about witholding rent, unless or until you are advised to, as it could work against you.
