Our house needs some work. We have been quoted £2,850.00 to replace the guttering/fascias and £990.00 for a very basic UPVC door.

We don't live in a mansion. In fact, it's a mid-terrace. The guttering is back and front. Can anyone confirm that this is reasonable?

Hi Catherine, I live in a four bed detached house and just had a quote from Norfolk Roofline to replace old wooden soffits, guttering, and a front bay window plus lower cladding for £2,998.

They apparently keep their costs down by not employing pushy sales people who come into your home and offer ridiculous start rates and then leave you feeling as though they've done you a whopping favour by dropping the amount to somewhere that 'they' think is reasonable.

One of the larger well known companies couldn't come close to that amount.

I found NRL by just Googling the words soffits and guttering.

Their website is full of glowing reviews and we know a few people around here who have had the work carried out and the results are excellent.

I don't know what part of the country you live in or even if distance would be a problem for that particular company but the bottom line here is that your quote does seem extremely high for the amount of work needed.

We are due to have the work carried out at the end of June so if you would like to know how I get on I would be happy to let you know via here or in your message box.

It sounds a little high - will they be providing the door & guttering etc? If so it may be worth seeing whether you can cut the cost by getting the materials yourself from Wickes or somewhere.

I always work on the principle of getting 3 quotes and then going with the company that seems most reasonable. If they've been recommended by someone I know, even better.

Way too much. Semi detached with garage was £1200. Door with good furniture plus design glass (properly sized and aligned) £800
