glasses or contact lenses some where cheaper. when i contacted the D&A (now BOOTS)said they can not. with D&A test and contact lenses for 6 months cost £155 (she said it is the best contact lenses and other cheaper one will irritate my eye) help me!!!!!
Hi Anuska,
As a contact lense wearer of many years, I can assure you that the info from D&A/Boots is incorrect.
Whichever optician does your contact lens test, they will give a prescription for the lenses. You can then choose to buy your contact lenses from that optician, or you can take your prescription with you and buy your contact lenses from anywhere you choose. Some wearers buy theirs online!
Some opticians may try to suggest that you buy your lenses from them, but you do not have to. This applies to glasses as well.
One bit of advice though, regardless of where you decide to buy your lenses or glasses from, do make sure you have regular eye and contact lens tests, as your prescription can change. I have a contact lens test every 6 months, and a full eye test every 2 years.
As fruitcake has said, you can take your prescription elsewhere, but I really would recommend getting regular check-ups, and paying close attention to the original prescription you're given. Generally, the opticians will have selected the best contact lenses for you, and all brands and types are different. You might find the brand you've been prescribed cheaper elsewhere (I used to buy mine online for far less than they'd cost at the opticians), but changing to new brands to save money could cause havoc on your eyes. That piece of information, at least, is correct.
Like I say, though, and like fruitcake has said. Please do go for regular check-ups. I'm one of an unfortunately minority whose eyes have been damaged by contact lenses. I can never wear them again, now. I dread to think of the damage that could have been done if I'd not been checked.
I've worn contact lenses for 5 years & intially I bought post eye test from my optician. Latterly I have remained with the same optician, but pruchased online. £155 sounds expensive, try buying in bulk, I having started buying 1 years supply per time.
There are quite a number of sites where you can purchase contact lenses much cheaper then in the high street - just do a search, including for comparison sites/reviews.
First, as many have said, wherever you get your contact lenses from, you need regular eye checks and one tip is that if you work with screens, your employer will often pick up the cost of annual check ups - certainly mine does, and if you don't get your glasses or contact lenses from the company testing you, you may find as I do that a contact lens eye check is quite expensive.
I then use contactlenses.co.uk to get my lenses and apart from the cost saving, it is interesting to read the reviews of the various types of lenses used by other people. For example, Acuvue Oasis lenses have a high water content and are extremely comfortable to wear, but I have found that compared to normal Acuvue lenses the standard of vision is worse - and many others have commented on this too.
Hope this helps

Fruitcake is absolutely right. I had my eyes tested last week and was given a copy of my prescription without even having to ask for it.
