What is the best way to correct my details on Credit reference agencies?

I have just applied for a credit card but been denied because "One or More Credit Reference Agencies could not verify the home address you supplied". Of course i supplied the right address... i got the letter! However a lot of the time on computerised systems my address is not listed/ listed wrongly, and believe this could be the problem. If i sign up to the 30 free trials that some give, Can i correct my details or only view them?
