The decision by Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, to permit Rupert Murdoch to take full control of BSkyB and not refer it to the monopolies and mergers commission means that Murdoch will take control and own globally the largest media empire.
His control of The Sun, The Times, The News of the World and The Sunday Times along with the fastest growing subscription based TV channel in the World is a dark day for impartiality in the media. The revenues generated by his empire will dwarf considerably the BBC and many other media companies combined revenues.
In effect Murdoch's empire will hold major influence in determining what we watch and read. In fact it could potentilly determine how we think and feel about any given subject.
Should we be worried by this? Should we fear the loss of impartiality and independence in the media?
Does the fact that the Conservative party approving this move without referring it to an independent body for a ruling is just another opportunity for them to cosy up to a man, who has shown in the past, that he controls more than mere newspapers and TV programming but sees himself as a powerful king-maker who weilds undemocratic control over a number of high-ranking government officials? Afterall Blair's New Labour came to power after Murdoch did a major u-turn and stopped supporting the then Conservative government and backed Blair's vision for a new Britain.
