I found this recently whilst on one of my favourite Rover forums.
Very useful!

It seems most councils will try and avoid liability but it seems there are ways round that!
Actually that is an excellent link and gives professional and sound advice.
Personally I have yet to damage a wheel rim or suspension but my tyre wear is accelerating at a massive and previously unheard of rate .... and the due to potholes and poor road surfaces in general, this tyre wear is all about uneven wear across the tread resulting in the tyres being renewed a lot earlier.
And yes, I have had that awful 'THUD' as you go over a deep one in the dark and the other week I nearly lost the steering due to the camber breaking up at the edge of a country road. You simply cannot avoid everything, can you?
Bravo OD ... good call.
Very useful! Thanks, Omendata.
I've had to replace a tyre, wheel and had to have the suspension springs replaced. The inner wheel rim was badly damaged by a big pothole that I couldn't avoid. The damage to the wheel rim damaged the tyre and caused a slow puncture, so I ended up paying almost £500 to replace both.
The suspension spring just snapped one day, which was very scary as part of it flew off and clanked onto the road. Luckily I was very near home and managed to limp back.
I can't say for sure whether the spring broke because of potholes, but it seems likely. I decided to replace both as I got such a fright when the first one broke! Replacement and fitting of both springs cost another £150.
I know I should have tried to claim the wheel and tyre from the council but I had no idea how to go about it. Thanks to Omendata's link, I will next time!
Yes ive hit a few potholes blew a tyre once but what i didnt realise is that if you hit a bump and it dent the rim of your tyre you can suddenly get a very slow slow puncture which can take over a week to go down so isnt noticeable - I had it on both wheels - it really needs the rims replaced which can be costly if you drive and expensive car.
As I drove (not the o and not the i) a Rover it cost me a packet of peanuts and 10p.
lol
My fruitster that must be an expensive car you drive £500 is a lot for two wheels! I would have put you as a Vauxhall Tigra (grrrrrllll) - I was going to say VW Beetle but thats too girly for you!
If I'd been around here earlier could probably have steered you in the right direction and got you them for a fraction.
Company called Europarts - If you need a part for your car try there then take it to the garage to have it fitted will save you a fortune in garage ripoff charges!
Another tip - Always carry a good digital camera in your cars glove compartment - useful for accidents . damage etc for evidence!
You mean a rear or was it front suspension damper spring?
I take it your hubby isnt good at car mechanics - thats an easy replacement!
That's exactly what happened, Omendata, I didn't realise that's what happens either. And the £500 was for ONE tyre and ONE wheel rim!
I bought the wheel rim myself direct and got the guys at my local tyre place (they're really good and are 5 mins from me) to get the tyre and fit it. Tyres for my car have to be specially ordered in advance as only extra wide Michelins fit it.
It was front suspension springs, the guy who does my car for me is really good, and never overcharges. He's an old-fashioned proper mechanic and runs his own little workshop.
Divorced hubby ten years ago, and even if I hadn't, he didn't have a clue about cars! :-)
My my so you drive a Ferrari - Is it red to match your hair then!
lol
Well, it wasn't a Ferrari last time I looked! And it's not red. :-)
Well by the price of two wheels being £500 it has to be a sports car. Dont know any basic cars that have wheels that cost that much!
Silly me Black it has to be black!
Hmmm
Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes Coupe , Bmw M3...???
My favourite a Jensen Interceptor or AC Cobra even???
Maybe its a customised wheel job - Fiat Panda V8 with big 20 inch rims now that would be a sight to see!
LOL
Might be black...might be a hearse...
Nice one Omendata, thanks for that.
We've potholes around here the size of craters, as yet though we've had no serious damage.
My worry is pulling out to avoid them, the consequences there don't bear thinking about.
Same here, Lillie, our roads are rural, narrow and with lots of blind bends, I daren't drive round a pothole. Our roads here had plenty of the damn things before the two lots of ice and snow, now they're more pothole than road! I try and memorise them in the daylight, so I can remember where they are in the dark, but I swear they move around when no one's looking!
As long as you are not driving with you eyes closed Fruite trying to remember them all. We have one so big that the council has placed cones round it, right on top of a bend so you have to go on the other side of the road on a blind bend.
Nothing like a bit of danger in your life.
Crumbs dear Fruity I hope we're not on the road at the same time both with our eyes closed, gulp!
darry that sounds scary and positively lethal.
I love turning the lights off on a dark road, just for a second or two, that frightingm, nothing like doing something to get the blood flowing. I normally slow right down first.
It's ok, I only close one eye! If you like dicing with death on the road, darry, come up to the wilds of Somerset!
Is that an offer Fruitcake, I will have to buy a piece of straw for mouth and a hat, lol.
I have been to Somerset once, I remember my Dad drove onto the beach with our hired caravan, and we got stuck in the sand as the tide came in and some locals managed to get us out with their 4x4, ha ha, I can recall the panic on my Dads face, what would the insurance company made of that ay.
Oh, yes, darry, a nice piece of straw to chew on, a bashed up floppy hat, pair of patched dungarees, and a nice pair of wellies! And don't forget to learn all the Wurzels songs as well! You'll blend right in! ;-) Oh, and they all have 4x4's round here...they call them tractors! (Just kidding, I'm a foreigner and they are the friendliest people in the world)
Well, I've just put air in my tyres this afternoon, and one of them has lost far more pressure than it should have done, looks as though I may have another damaged one... *&%$!!!
