Has anyone cancelled their on-line banking after problems with on-line banking fraud. If so how long did it take and what bank?

Donk yes I did with Barclays but this was a few years ago, I think it took a couple of weeks to finalise that it was closed online. I had to write to Barclays.

Mind you I'm not sure if you are talking about the online account having fraud activity because my account hadn't. What pushed me was my wifes card was cloned so we took that risk away.

Hi Donk. When you say cancel the on-line banking facility, do you mean ask the bank to cancel access to your Internet banking number and security number and then reissue all of this under different numbers?

About a year ago I had a serious potential fraud problem with HSBC where a virus had got in and was displaying a false HSBC logging page. It was impossible to tell the difference except that it was asking me for my full security number and not just a selection of digits as it normally does. My conversations with HSBC's internet banking helpline were nothing to write home about and their advice was poor. In the end, I completely reformatted my PC and added a paid for spy ware product alongside my virus package. That solved in but only through my own resources. I changed my security number immediately it happened as well.

HSBC have since introduced a great security measure now to prevent on-line banking fraud and it is called Rapport. I think that development was as a direct result of the fake website pages going round. Really scary at the time.

Hi Donk ... actually I didn't suffer any losses because I nipped the situation in the bud but had I not, the bandits would have had access to my whole internet banking facility. So there was no need to compensation. What did surprise me was the apparent lack of care and professional concern from the people at the end of the internet banking helpline. They had no idea what I was talking about even though this was was effectively of major concern to every HSBC account holder who banks online. The Rapport system of protection is excellent and it always prompts me if I am on a bogus website. I still get 'phishing' emails from HSBC, Halifax and even Natwest ( where I have no account ) and always send them onto the appropriate report line. I don't think those emails are particularly aimed at me, they are just send out in their thousands on a 'number crunching' basis.

I have to admit that I do put trust in online banking as the alternative would mean a lot of telephone or leg work! What I do find amusing is when, for example, HSBC phoned me for a security check i.e. I once drew out two lots of £300 from an ATM within 24 hrs and they rang me as the activity was 'unusual', and they proceeded to ask me questions for security clearance before they could talk to me. When I mentioned that they had phoned me and could I run them through my own 'security clearance', they were not impressed but I reminded them that they rang me and as such they could have been anybody!

Yes Donk ... I was talking recently to a specialist in business internet security and he applauded HSBC in their current efforts and the introduction of Rapport ( which customers have to download and is in addition to your own security arrangements ). Plus, when I have visited people who bank with HSBC for their business, they are supplied with a 'dongle' that generates a security code every time they use it. To be honest, I am not a fan of any bank but it is noted that HSBC do appear to be on the case here!
