buying a house nearby the sea.

I do live by the sea, but not sure how this question is related to any money topic. Do you have a particular reason for asking, ie house prices?????

House prices are usually more expensive if you live near the sea, and travelling to work can be a problem, but yes I know a few people that have done that and retired there. Alternatively how about Bali, Indonesia - now property there is quite cheap and living is cheap - unfortunately you have to be Indonesian to stay and buy property, but you can rent or get married to an Indonesian !

I would love to live by the sea. At the moment I am almost as far away from it as it is possible to be in the UK. But like Wendie says, What has this to do with money?

Hi Sunflower

I live by the sea, infact in an area which during the summer has a high level of tourists. There are down sides to what most people aspire to.

As some have mentioned the house prices and cost of living is high. In the summer you are trying to go about your normal daily life - work, school, etc and "visitors" to the area make that difficult. There can be issues with drinking and drugs in certain areas and then damage to the area causes by people in these states.

That being said I would not like to live elsewhere.

Well Sunflower, yes I would love to live by the sea. And attractive that is may be, it's not without its pitfalls ... seal salt erosion has many effects on property structure, the weather is not always kind close to the ocean, there is the question of coastal erosion for people right on the sea and of course the threat of living in a flood plain.

Dreaming again, are we?

I grew up in a house that was about 150 yards from the sea, sunflower. We lived so close to it that I fell asleep every night by listening to the waves. When I first moved away from the sea I couldn't sleep because I was so used to the sound of the waves, didn't miss the foghorn though! I'd give anything to live by the sea again, despite the foghorn!

Hi fruitcake ..Was it expensive to live there? Was that the reason for moving on?

by donk, 1 year ago

I was only 5 years old when we moved there, so my parents paid the bills! I guess it was expensive in that you had to travel 3 miles or so to shops etc, but I've no idea whether the house itself was expensive to buy. I moved out at 18, but my parents stayed there for years after that, and only sold up because someone (a complete stranger!) saw the house, fell in love with it, knocked on the door and...in my dad's words...'made him an offer for the house that he couldn't refuse!'

Just reading your message fruitcake from 5 month's ago.
I've always wanted to live by the sea as I am totally fascinated
and we often take our lunch and watch the activity.
If I had won the millions last night I would have bought a property overlooking the sea.

I love the sea, Sabre, and I'm only ever happy near it! Weirdly, only last night I was thinking about how much I wish I still lived there. My dream has always been to buy my own little island...hmm!
