Well looks like they have done it again and our personal details are now at the full mercy of the criminal element amongst us.
Never mind Santander having to pay a fine to some finanacial organisation we know nothing about why not compensate those actually affected.
Do you think Santander account holders affected or perhaps all Santander account holders should be compensated and how much by?
Perhaps customers should start a criminal action it really is terrible when these companies know how important security and privacy are now!
What's this all about? I haven't heard about this.
I read about this yesterday, however the error isn't likely to affect the security of the individuals etc. Did it affect you Omendata? It may be a case that compensation is due, but it doubt it would be substantial and would likely end up being a token £5 or something.
I believe it is a terrible error on their part however I haven't seen how many details were detailed on the wrong statements.
I have to admit that although I was indeed aware of the fiasco, I never thought in terms of customer compensation, probably because I simply don't bank with these people ( the usual thinking, somebody else's problem .... ). But after some thought I have to totally agree with you. The real harm is with the end user and not a regulatory body, indeed that kind of fine is simply 'lip service'. I don't know about the criminal action bit as this would need need proof of criminal intent? The problem with a large organisation that depends heavily on fault free IT equipment and 'fault free' employees, is simply that personal and technical errors can and do occur and that, I suggest, is not criminal intent ( unless say, an aggrieved employee had committed sabotage ).
But you are right, this is a tremendous invasion of privacy and human rights and needs to be compensated in some monetary form, as an expression of admittance to the problem. I think such a payment to each customer should be £100 as a minimum.
I have been affected i was sent the details of someone elses address and how much their mortgage is , how much they pay per month for electricity and gas and even who its paid to with some account numbers on the statements and a date of birth all ripe for identity fraud its absolutely disgraceful and I have already contacted a lawyer about it as I have no idea who now has my details it could be anyone!
Compensation £1,000,000 each would be nice!
Hi Omendata
When I read this I was greatly disturbed by it, it seems that once again somebody has really dropped the ball! I bank with Santander and have expressed concerns about them and this has seriously brought to my mind again that I should change to someone else.
My O/H has had a statement through, thankfully it was only one page long and all seemed to be in order - I will be checking my statement through very carefully when it arrives, but I don't think that I will be affected.
I think that Santander should pay a fee to it's customers - there should be a two tier system - a fee to non effected customers of say £25 to restore confidence in their services and then to those effected a fee of £100 as compensation. This will be so painful for them to pay they will never allow something like this to happen again and it will be a warning to all banks and building societies to safeguard against such breaches in future.
