What's the best way to get a free upgrade to business or first class on a flight?

by , 1 year agoOpen Question

I've asked a number of times, but never had any joy. Has anyone here had any luck getting an upgrade?

Say you are on your honeymoon?! I must admit the closest I got to an upgrade was being moved to the front of the plane with lots of leg room! It is probably a lot easier when you are travelling alone as you would be easier to accommodate on for example an over capacity flight! Do airlines still do this though?

Tried the honeymoon one without success. The plane was full though so maybe you'd be more lucky if there were spaces.

Like wise we tried that and got the cold shoulder. The plane was not full and still got the cold shoulder.

Of course, why didn't I think of that!

I am a frequent flyer on a few airlines and if there are spare seats in the business class and its full in economy I often get upgraded without asking - and once they also upgraded my wife who was travelling with me and she isn't a frequent flyer.

So, donk, if you get upgraded and your wife doesn't, do you leave her to sit in economy by herself? :-)

Actually fruitcake that did happen once and there was total confusion. It's a long story and occurred when we booked our flights separately. We checked-in online and managed to select adjacent seats, but when we got to the desk at the airport I got an automatic upgrade to a business seat and my wife was then left sitting next to a stranger, so after a huge delay they had to re-allocate us two new seats in economy, which were fine but not what we exactly wanted. It doesn't happen if we book the tickets at the same time so they know we are travelling together.

That's very good of you donk! I've always wondered what it's like flying business. Does it make that much of a difference?

A gentleman's answer, donk! :-)

Actually the option was for her to travel in Business and me in economy, but we both thought it was more important for us to be together than have a more comfortable sleep, better wine, wider choice of food and TV films etc etc. Next time it happens she will be in business on her own I think!

Aww, that's sweet!

Hi Wallet

I think that the days of free upgrades are over! Why not just book extra leg room when booking the flight.
