What is the best and easiest way to find places/charities where you can volunteer your time. Is there a web site anyone knows?

The government is promoting the British 'Big Society' , but I haven't found any practical tips on how to easily achieve this and search in just one place?

In our area we have a local communities foundation which you can approach to offer help. You may have something similar in your area.
