I am very similar to yourself in that I always book the flights/hotels separately, which I often like for the flexibility. I know that package deals can have their benefits but I don't like being tied down to everything. You can get some extremely cheap last minute deals with package holidays but the same can be said when booking separately. I guess it is each to their own!
I can't remember the last time I booked a package holiday! Whilst it may take the leg work (and extra cash from you) I have always found that you pay way over the odds for a holiday that you can book yourself much cheaper. I have compared brochure prices many times in the past to prices for the same holiday booked independently and there just is no comparison. Package holidays are always more expensive. I have often wondered how long it will be before travel agents will go out of business but I suppose there are many people still left who are happy to leave it to them and pay extra for this privilege.
I have only ever once been on a package holiday, just to see what it was like, it was a holiday in Africa, and actually it was very good, and excellent value! I always normally book everything independently because, like TheBandit, I like the flexibility. I think it's just a case of whatever you prefer really, as there are bargains to be had either way.
