Should I get an iPad?

by , 1 year agoOpen Question

I've been coveting one for ages & spotted that Apple are having a sale tomorrow. I'm debating whether to get one or not and just wondered whether I should just go for it or get one of the cheaper alternatives instead.

If you can afford it then go for it!! They are amazing! I would love one but don't think I can justify the expense...although I will be checking how big the discounts are tomorrow!

My girlfriend bought one during the Black Friday sell off at the Apple store in Bluewater and she has not regretted the decision. Takes it everywhere with her...and in time it will pay for itself after using Voucher Cloud and buying the books in digital form than in paper/hardback format.

Now I'm suffering regret!

I got one a couple of months ago and I have to admit that they are great and have a really good battery life around 10 hours which is what eventually persuaded me. We took it on holiday with us recently and it was great for my daughter to keep her entertained and as the hotel had wifi she was able to download books off iTunes when she had finished reading the book she had taken with her. We were travelling with hand luggage only and lots of heavy books can make a big difference to the weight issue. I thought I would struggle with the keyboard but it is very good to use and I am using it now to type this! It is sometimes a lot quicker as when you switch it on the connection is immediate and much faster than waiting for my laptop to fire up. I got the 64gb version without wifi contract and got it off eBay for £550 (plus £5 off for going through Quidco) and the rrp is £600 for this version so it will be interesting to see what price Apple are discounting them to. Great for music and photos and very light and portable and there are lots of free apps that you can download. It is a great little bit of kit and I would recommend it.

Just checked what the sale price is going to be on the iPad. £35 discount across the range but you can get 4% cash back if you go through Quidco.

Hi FrenchWoodGirl... its a 3% discount for iPads through Quidco but is 4% for other Apple products :)

Did you get one then?

Hi LittlePiskey

Why not do a comparison, there must be a website out there where you can look at the stats to see what is going to be the best for you!

They do look good though but beware that these things are so quickly out of date with new things on the market arriving all the time, I imagine that Apple are already working on the new generation.

Depends what you want it for. I purchased mine a few months ago, because I am studying, and thought it would be useful for that, which it certainly has been. It is a lovely piece of kit, and is very versatile, although it does take a while to get used to. My personal feeling is that it is worth paying for the quality, and that Apple still have the edge. At this level of computer, to me it is better to spend a little bit more and get the functionality, rather than compromise, but it depends on how much you have to spend. I'm delighted with my purchase - the only problem I have is getting it back from my brother on occasion!

Thanks for that everyone. After spending the day deliberating I think I've decided against it for the time being. While I really (really!) want one I think I'll be better off getting a proper laptop for the moment. Being sensible sucks though!

Hi there the answer is yes. Quicker smarter and more fun than almost anything.

Get the one with 3G. I was lucky enough to win the iPad from Money and I luv it.Wished it had been the one with 3G but perhaps in time it will be possible to get BT fon to work on it.

It's not a complete substitute for a PC or laptop though. Although it may be possible to find a good excel and word look a like but it is firmly for email iTunes photos and reading books and newspapers as well as surfing all day long. There are some sites that don't support IPad yet and they have to give you a mobile app to use on it and there are some things like Java and Adobe
that aren't supported which means you cant upload pics to sites e g eBay. don't let that deter you. Go for it! Who needs version two this is brilliant.
