Gartner, the research organisation, has found that within five years social media will become the leading form for exchanging information and that email will be phased out.
I can't see email going out of favour. As others have said Facebook serves a different purpose, it is for keeping in touch with friends and not much else. Whereas email can be used for quite formal purposes and business arrangements as well as keeping in touch with friends.
Personally I prefer to use email. I do have a Facebook account but I don't really feel comfortable using it. I suppose, inevitably, change will come and I'll just have to get used to it.
Hi Feline,
Yes I prefer emailing as I don't have a Facebook account.
Most of my family use FB but I was never tempted as I would worry about the privacy issues regarding id theft etc.
I Hope we don't lose the emailing facility as I rely on it quite heavily.
Hi Donk,
Yes I am an avid emailer and would be unhappy to lose it.
Not everyone cares for these social network sites so I wonder if they will come up with an alternative to the email, if not it's back to the phone for me.
I use both but would always opt for email for anything sensitive. It's probably best to imagine that if using FB, even when sending a private message, that someone unknown could see that message. Facebook has allowed me to keep in touch with friends and family that I would only otherwise see at weddings and funerals. It's a black hole of time-wasting however! Email is great for direct communication and I would hate to loose it now.
I use email. FB and other social networks just don't interest me, and I'm concerned about the privacy issues in using them. Most of my friends and family do use FB though, and I'm constantly inundated with friend requests which I just ignore! I seem to be thought of as 'weird' for not having a FB account, but, hey, I already know I'm weird! :-)
I use Facebook for chatting with friends and certain family members, and e-mail for formal communications and conversations with those more distant family members that you just don't get as chatty with.
I still love email. Facebook is great, but for a proper one to one, I just feel that it is more personal and more secure.
I work in local government and when we were told to use e-communication more, I rebelled a tad thinking that it was unprofessional and unsafe. But now my whole working day is built around emailing all my contacts and I have even reached the dizzy heights of using texting for work as it is so good for confirming appointments and requesting information and contact. Outside work, my passion to email everyone and everything persists. I do have a FB account but don't 'go there' much as my experience of others using it is that unwarranted comments can raise emotions! Frankly I find FB just a tad 'in your face' at times.
I agree that text can be very useful as well - it is great for a reminder of appointments that might otherwise be missed or could be cancelled (eg dentist, hairdresser etc)
