I normally spend about £30-£5/per month. Also looking for a good deal on iphone insurance - seems insurers are more than doubling the normal premium for iphone cover!
Was it the iphone 4 you were after? I think 3 are meant to do the most minutes/texts for your money. Otherwise I think Tesco do a really cheap 12 month contract but you need to pay a fair whack up front.
Can you see if you can get your phone covered on your home insurance. Might be the cheapest way of doing it.
Unfortunately mobile phone providers don't seem to offer ANY deals on iPhones! On Orange the cheapest monthly deals will be with 24 month contracts but for £35 you will still need to pay £119 for the phone.
For insurance unfortunately the value of the iPhone means that cheap insurance is very hard to find. As GinnyB says, it may be worth trying to see if you can get it on your home insurance or current account if you pay for your account.
You can try mobile comparison sites.

They're amazing! My first smart phone and I'd be lost without it now.
