Help! Non crafty person needs help to Dye curtains!

by , 1 year agoOpen Question

I am planning a revamp on a room in my house - on a budget, so I am open to ideas on where to get the best good quality carpet - has anybody used online companies? I also need to know the best way to dye cream curtains made of cotton to a Duck Egg Blue colour - has anybody tried this and how did it turn out? I am not very crafty like this and am a bit worried that they will turn out blotchy, too light/dark - any advice appreciated. Thank You.

Re your curtains; there is a range of Dylon dyes to use in the washing machine (try Robert Dyas or John Lewis) and I have successfully used the turquoise blue to dye a large sheet to use as a tablecloth and some white napkins to match. I was very pleased with the result. Follow the pack instructions very carefully. It is important to wash the curtains first as instructed to remove any hidden grease/dirt that will stop the dye being absorbed by the fibres and to use the correct amount of dye to fabric and salt as instructed. If the curtains are at all worn or are patchy because of fading in sunlight then you may get a patchy result. Also best not to dry them in bright sunlight after dyeing (although the chance would be a fine thing at this time of year!) You do take a chance on the colour though - maybe you could do a test run on a small pack of the same colour and some fabric from the hem of the curtains but remember the result may be different when you scale up the process.

I've just thought of another thing - man-made fabrics will take the dye differently from natural fibres such as cotton, so if the curtains are man-made (say polyester) or a blend, and the lining is cotton then you will get different take-ups and thus different colours for the curtains and the lining.

Hi Sidesalad

Thank you so much for this excellent advice. I guess nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Maybe do the curtains first then paint the room to match - just in case the colour does not turn out as expected!

I have used a dark blue and if doing a darker colour, be careful to follow instructions carefully, if soaking manually that you stir thoroughly or else as you may realize the dye will not take if not properly soaked or stirred. Good luck
