What are you looking for in a hotel when you go on holiday?

by , 1 year agoOpen Question

Would you pay more to stay somewhere that was more luxiourious and offered better services especially for children but was smaller than a lot of hotels?
would services like chauffeuring, cooked meals, personal guide/helper and child-minding also increase the likelyhood of you staying there?
what would you really like from your hotel?
how much would you pay?
i keep thinking about potentially starting my own business in the middle east/north africa.
where would you like this sort of hotel to be? is this a bad idea?

I would pay no more than £70 per night for accommodation. I'm not bothered about decor, or even facilities, as long as there's an en-suite bathroom.

by cpj1987, 1 year ago

thats what i think most people will say, but you would rather stay somewhere that gives you more for you money though?

by katkity, 1 year ago

Obviously the more the better, for a price, but comparing a £50 a night hotel with an en-suite room and nothing else, and a £80 per night hotel with additional facilities, I would, without doubt, pay the £50.

I work in an industry relating to holiday accommodation, and see a lot of properties for varying prices, and find that in any one location I can find many, many cheap hotels that, given the choice, I'd choose over more expensive ones. That said, when staying in a hotel I tend to only be making the most of time in the bedroom - it's the only time I ever get to relax and pamper myself, do some reading or take an early night without feeling like I'm missing out on something. For that reason, I usually have little reason to even notice the rest of a hotel!

It's always lovely to wake knowing that I'll be provided with breakfast in the same building, but that kind of thing can be found elsewhere, too!

by cpj1987, 1 year ago

Ye going out the breakfast is a pain!

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

thats really interesting! haha yeah i know what you mean! :)

by katkity, 1 year ago

So much depends on the location of the hotel and the country you are in. What is considered an expensive hotel in some countries is laughably cheap when compared to London, New York or Tokyo. What do I want in a hotel? For me a hotel has to be convenient (for whatever I am doing or going to), spotlessly clean and quiet at night. The bed must be big and comfortable with no plastic mattress protector (my pet hate). I want good quality toiletries and fluffy towels. Decor is not really important but I like good lighting especially in the bathroom. A restaurant is essential if the hotel is remote but otherwise I would go out to eat - its almost always cheaper for dinner and breakfast. I have no interest in chauffeurs, guides, booking agents etc but like internet access to be available and included in the room rate. Can't say what I'd pay - depends on country, area etc etc.

That made me laugh! Everybody's pet hate!

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

Don't remind me about the plastic mattress protectors. Back in May I spent several sleepless nights wondering why I was so hot, crackling noises whenever I moved etc (thought it was the cockroach population - yes, it was that bad), finally took everything off the bed at 4am and there was one of those!!! Never seen one before, didn't know they existed (not plastic ones, I have lovely soft quilted ones). Yuk! Will check before first nights sleep next time!

i know the mattress protectors are hidieous! wendiew was this in the apartment from hell?

That sounds a really exciting business, not sure I would be brave enough to start up a business in these areas. I paid a lot of money to go to a fantastic hotel in Mexico for my brother's wedding earlier this year and I was not disappointed. The standard of service/food/rooms was excellent and it is true that to a certain extent you get a much better quality the more you pay. However, this holiday was an exception to the rule for us and I always try and get the best available price I can for accommodation. I like to have a balcony/view and as long as it is clean and well maintained I am fairly easy to please. I always like to have a fridge in my room and tea/coffee making facilities (you usually get these anyway if you are self catering) and I think above all I really appreciate helpful and courteous staff. I have booked what seems to be a fantastic hotel in Portugal (rated 3*) and has really good reviews on tripadvisor for a week at the end of October, beginning of November for just under £200 including flights on a B&B basis which I think is a fantastic price for two of us. Normally I wouldn't pay for additional services such as chauffeuring/personal guide as I like to find my own way about and explore but I am sure there are many that would pay extra for this type of personalized service. It goes without saying that I like the hotel to have a pool and bar area and be within walking distance of a beach but I have stayed in places further out where I have rented a car. My daughter is a bit older now and doesn't really require child minding and I am not really sure I would consider this in a foreign country with people I don't know. However, children's clubs are a great way of allowing parents to have their own bit of free time but I would imagine there are all sorts of rules and regulations that you would have to comply with to offer this type of service. I love most places in Europe but particularly Spain, Italy and France. I have never really had any desires to go to North Africa or the Middle East although I did go to Tunisia once about 11 years ago. I prefer smaller hotels over massive big complexes as I feel they are have more personality and if run well can be a pleasure to stay in. I subscribe to a newsletter from Little Hotels of Spain and they have some real gems on there. Worth a look if this is something you are considering doing in the future. I know it would be my dream to do something like this one day.

I regularly visit Israel (I have a friend who lives there) and she has a young family, and says that there are a number of hotels that cater to that (and a number that cater specifically for people without children!). I suspect that some of those services would be very appealing to her (well, all of them, but she can't afford them at the moment). I'm talking to her on Sunday night, and am happy to ask about whether she has any ideas about how welcome this would be and what it would be best to focus on - it could be she knows wealthier families who would leap at something like this. I think it is a good idea. There are lots of families with large numbers of children in these areas (to make a sweeping statement!!!) so creating a comfortable, family friendly environment is definitely a market worth exploring.

Good point each culture is different and it is important to focus on whehter it is the indigneous population you are catering for or the foreigners

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

oo if you wouldnt mind that would be great! :) thanks!

We had a trip to Australia last year and decided that we should not skimp on accommodation as we didn't want to remember the holiday for the bad accommodation. We chose an apartment that was in a hotel so that we could relax and cook our own meals if we wanted. It worked out really well and cost about the same price as a normal hotel room.

For me, when staying somewhere it is more important that it is clean, well maintained and that the staff are helpful. Things to do at the hotel are less important as there are usually lots of other sites to see.

by MarkX, 1 year ago

I agree

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

so you think offering self-catering is a good idea? :)

by katkity, 1 year ago

Yes - self catering linked to a hotel is a great idea. When you are on a long trip eg Australia you just do not want to be in a hotel all the time and self-catering but with the option of hotel facilities would be excellent.

by Sidesalad, 1 year ago

It worked for us as it was an apartment ie bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and lounge area. It just gave us a bit more flexibility if we needed it (plus we could wash all our own stuff without expensive hotel laundry bills!!). Also, it was pretty much the same price as having just a hotel room but with all the facilities the hotel had to offer if we needed them.

by MarkX, 1 year ago

thats a good point, i loved my selfcatering appartment in malta :)

The most important thing to me is that wherever I choose to stay it has been represented honestly in the advertising. I might opt for cheapo digs sometimes or I might book full 5 star luxury, I expect both to be clean and fit for purpose - I've never seen a hotel advertising itself as grotty, filthy and unfit for habitation but I have found them that way on arrival!
I'm in a similar business and my website and advertisements are totally honest. I supply everything I have promised, the accommodation will be immaculately clean when guests arrive, furnishings, decor and fittings are in top condition etc. I have never had a complaint from a guest, and if I did get one I would be distraught, ashamed and would feel I had spoilt their holiday - can't imagine how bad I would feel about that.
Your idea sounds fabulous, what an exciting venture. I would suggest that maybe the 'extras' (chauffeuring, guide, child-minding) be optional extras at extra charge, as those who do not wish to use the extras will probably feel hard done by if they believe they are being charged for them but not requiring them.
I have never visited the middle east, but I have been to Tunisia, just once, and I would not go there again out of choice - just not 'my thing', so I'm not really a prospective customer for you I'm afraid. I do wish you every success and I certainly don't think it's a bad idea - as long as you do all your research/costings and so on it could be fantastic! Good luck!

by wendiew, 1 year ago

I agree with wendiew. I would expect a hotel to be clean, well maintained and welcoming. After that I'm not too bothered. I think the extras should be charged as such, not everyone will require them. Good luck, you're brave to do it.

by roseangel, 1 year ago

so glad i asked this question! everyone has had such great perspectives, yeah i could do it as optional extras! yeah hotel rooms have to be clean, well maintained and welcoming 2 out of 3 just isnt good enough!

by katkity, 1 year ago

Good all round standards combined with excellent facilities and friendly staff. This is the foundation stone for an enjoyable pleasant holiday.

by Noddy1, 1 year ago

Yes friendly staff very imp.

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

it sounds it :) ive always been lucky that the places ive stayed have mostly very friendly staff!

by katkity, 1 year ago

I like a comfortable bed and lovely bathroom with good shower.I am afraid I wd want to avoid somewhere that catered for kids! LOL. But it is good things to do. I like lux small boutique. Wd hate chauffering although that is the norm in Sri lanka - quite strange. meals yes need to eat but usually don't eat in hotel prefer local and authentic. Never ever want a guide. But if you let me know when you open up I'll come and see you!

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

haha if i open it i'll do a special rate for my-money-iers! :D

by katkity, 1 year ago

Obviously, you want everything to be just perfect when you,ve saved hard earned money to go on hols, but to me cleanliness,is utmost, then good friendly staff, most other things you can deal with.OH of course and plenty of sun.

by blondie, 1 year ago

I agree but PLEASE don't forget the air con!!!!

by Gelfling, 1 year ago

yup i agree cleanliness followed by aircon! :D only been in one hotel room with out when it was broken and you about melt!

by katkity, 1 year ago

Sorry folks, buti dont do air con.52degrees in turkey and i love it.Im a freezer.

by blondie, 1 year ago

how much i would pay depends on the type of break/holiday i am having. if i am on a low-budget weekend away somewhere in Europe, because I found a great deal for the plane ticket or something it would deter the object if I was and splashed out on some fancy hotel.

But if it is going to be a special holiday or something I would consider paying a significant amount for accommodation.

Also, because the purposes of trips are different. One may be a short weekend in which you are going to be out and about all day, only using the hotel to sleep, or if it is a relaxing break in which you will be enjoying the time in the hotel a bit more, etc.

Having said that, all I want is a private bathroom, cleanliness and wifi in the room. If there are some nice goodies in the bathroom it is even better :)

by palandraca, 1 year ago

yeah ive never stayed somewhere without a private bathroom but it sounds horrible! :|

by katkity, 1 year ago

I would always stay somewhere smaller and personal. I don't like big chains as find them noisy i.e. people with TV's on load in the early hours etc. Much prefer the more luxurious hotels, prefer it to be well decorated, nice bedding (not old-fashioned) and overall a clean crisp look. I think offering the extra services as an addition would be best, rather than factoring them into the price, as not everyone will want them

by Sporty, 1 year ago

yeah thats seems to be the consensus! :)
