For the first time in over 12 months we got an Indian takeaway this evening, it was a real treat but OMG I can't believe the price! 1 chicken korma, 1 bhuna, 1 boiled rice, 1 onion bhaji, 1 shami kebab, 5 chappatis. Total price £26.50 (the chapatis were £1 each!!!!!!). Is this standard price everywhere? I think it'll be 10 years before we do it again!!
Well I have just priced up this with my local Indian takeaway and it came to £17.15!! Free delivery on orders over £8 within a 4 mile radius. The chapatis were only 60 pence each though and I think this is a pretty good price compared to what others are paying and it is very good food too!! I am in the NW of the country. Not sure if it is anything to do with having quite a high population of Indians/Asians in the local community.
I think if I ordered that it would cost about £23 give or take. The Chappatis were £1 each? I know that is expensive!! Which city do you live near to? As across the nation the prices do vary. The further south you go, the more expensive it seems to get!!
I don't have a nearby city! I live at the very furthest end of the world in North Wales. Don't know about dearer prices in the South, seems to me that heading West is the expensive direction!
haha, yeah sounds like it. Ah, well, sorry to hear about that. I also forgot to add in my answer that if it was a takeaway (which it sounds like what you had) I would get an extra 20% off so it'd only be about £19. Just to rub salt into that wound...
Sorry! =)
Cheers for that!! I feel so much better now I don't think!!!!!!! Good job it tasted great, (but not £26.50 worth of great)!
Never mind. Now you know from bad experience not to go there again!! =)
That's about the same price as it would be where i live, maybe even slightly cheaper than it is here. I'm in the South West of England, not that far from South Wales.
i checked the prices for the same meal from a takeaway menu i have in the kitchen drawer! :)
Wow, well I'm going to check my takeaway menu because for Birmingham, the prices seem just too good to be true!
Just checked with my father-in-law, he lives in Bradford, West Yorkshire. My bill would have been £16 there, and that's including delivery and a free big bottle of pop!!!!!!!!!! It's just like petrol prices, they charge what they can get away with in each different area. Thanks.
It comes to £21.65 on a takeaway menu I have. The chapattis were £1.10 each! So a similar price.
That sounds about right. Do you not get takeaway discount or anything??
Crazy! chapattis in India cost as little as 5 rupees (8-10 pence)in India
No, that was on a dedicated takeaway menu.
It isn't the one I normally use but I couldn't find the menu for that one but I expect it would be a similar price.
Your main meals must be a lot cheaper than mine, amazing what they charge for chapatis - I'm off to look up how to make them myself - that'd save £5 on the bill. Thanks
i just calculated in the menu for my local place it works out to just over £27. of course mines is a little more expensive just to distance! :)
As you mentioned distance I assume there's a delivery charge in with that price? We don't have any places that offer delivery (not for free or for a charge). This takeaway lark is expensive everywhere it seems. Top tip: Don't have one!! :)
yeah its about £4. yeah i try not have take aways and almost never get them delievered as it tends to be quicker and cheaper to drive there get it yourself and back.
Just priced it up and it came to £24.05 and our chappatis were £1 each too. If you want to save in the future, look in the local papers for discount vouchers and then save it for the next time you want to treat yourself. With people having to save money, take aways are near the top of the "can do without" list, so hopefully the restaurants will be offering more discounts to try to entice us.
Thanks, unfortunately it's a tourist hot spot where I live, so there's no discounts or offers - they have a captive audience who will pay. Is a bit rough on the locals though.
When my wife and I used to have takeaways a few years back, one of the things we got into was always ordering from the same restaurant. - became a frequent customer.
We would ask them for a discount because we were regulars and also removal of the delivery charge. The restaurant is still in business and based on their price (just checked on the internet) it would have been around £34, so you're lucky..
I just calculated your order at my favourite local Indian takeaway, and it came to £19.40, with the chapatis costing 70p each.
A bit cheaper than others would have to pay, it seems.
That's not bad, I wouldn't have been quite so aghast if we'd been charged that much. Thanks
It costs a lot! Here is a tip i left on 'I want to spend less on food' to recreate your own takeaway. It' s yummy and much healthier - Enjoy!
Instead of buying an indian takeaway. Make your own thali - this is the Indian national dish. Authentic curry can be very cheap with wonderful flavours. It can be quite time consuming but if you can spend an afternoon (if you have time) making a few different curries, you can then freeze them in foil trays (like the ones you get at the takeaway) - you can buy them in the shops.
Dahl is simple and extremely cheap to make - there are hundreds of recipes for this on the internet. We often eat this with some rice and veg on a week day.
You can make whatever curries you like (i always make veggie ones, you'll get enough protein from the rice and lentils) but try using seasonal veg as it's cheaper.
Pop to an Asain supermarket to get spices they are much cheaper for larger packets. There are 100's of recipes on line for different curries. I love potato and aubergine curry. Using spices are much cheaper than the stuff you get in the jars and it will taste so much better.
When you fancy an Indian takeaway just take the curries you made from the freezer and cook some rice. Maybe you'd like to serve with yoghurt and naan bread. Or try making your own very cheap raita (like you get in the restaurant - using plain yoghurt, mint sauce to taste and a bit of tumeric for the colour.
You can buy a pack of 6 chapatis (£1) from Asain Supermarkets
Why does my text end up in one huge block!! I put paragraphs in ;/!!
You have really enthused me. I do like a tastey curry as opposed to a hot one. I think I will make dahl it is lovely comfort food. And the weather is beckoning that as well!
Yes, once you get the bug they'll be no stopping you!
Cheap tasty curry - yum!!
Rosie I so agree with you. Indian food is not difficult to make but it takes some organisation beforehand. For inspiration there are usually Indian cookery books for sale at charity shops and even if you buy a tray or two of ready-made Indian dishes at the supermarket, adding your own raita, chutney and rice saves money and makes it all the more tasty.
Thanks for the ideas, last nights takeaway was just a spur of the moment treat, so I didn't have to cook/wash up etc etc. Sadly no Asian supermarkets within 100 miles of here.
Wow - that's a lot of money! Have you checked out some of the 'takeaway for 2' boxes from Asda or Sainsbury? I'm sure that they cost much less than that and only have to be zapped in the microwave when you get home.
Just another comment - we had lunch at Ask yesterday using a 2 for £10 main course voucher (I know we're talking Italian and not Indian here) and had two big main courses, two glasses of wine and two coffees for less than that - and someone else served it up and washed up afterwards.
Thanks, Have had the asda 'takeaways', but last night was just a spur of the moment treat.
ASDA are currently doing a meal for 2 at £5.99 a good size meal for 2 people.By comparison the same meal as you ordered in our Indian comes out at just over £20
Thanks, just been to asda, certainly better value, but last night was just a spur of the moment treat.
You got to have the occasional blowout.

Wow!! Even better!
Where we live it depends where you go. You can get a meal for two really cheap but if you want quality you need to pay a bit extra. £26.50 does seem pretty steep!
I live in London and Indian takeaways for 2 are always over £20. Anybody know a cheaper one? However, we use Holy Cow - absolutely lovely food.
