Sometimes a lot of us like to go to a traditional cafe for a good fry up. Although these are not that healthy they can be good value and you are supporting a small business in an area that is in decline.
Where do you go locally? If you are in a different town and fancy a fry up how do you find out the best place to go? I've found a site, www.fryup.net, that looks like it could be fry up equivalent of this site but doesn't have the members. Does anyone know of any others like this?
Hi Markx. In Bristol where I live there are a few great local cafe's about, you hear by word of mouth, also I don't know whether you have any in your area, but in some of our lay bys we have mobile kitchens that serve superb food and at a reasonable price.
i must admit i just stumble into the nearest cafe that looks clean and if its awful i go elsewhere. :)
Unless it was really dirty I would give it a go!
they usually smell of grease
i must admit thats part of the reason i eat them so rarely. haha i meant if the food is awful i dont use them again, but unless its clean i dont go there! :)
My house!!he he best around
How much does it cost? What's available? Can I pop round?
free for my very best friends! anytime
egg bacon sossage the works
lol, well if you on a journey and pass through Westmorland, then I highly recommend the Tebay Services http://www.westmorland.com/tebay Amazing food (restaurant quality) which includes a seriously good fry up. We go up to Scotland every year (travelling at night) and that is where we get our fortifying breakfast. Delicious, a reasonable price and lovely service. It makes you wonder why other motorway services feel the need to serve cardboard rather than food...
The chains are rubbish and over priced, a proper meal is better anyday
you won't get better than home made
I totally agree,smartcar.
Yes, you are right, homemade is best, but for those times when you are nowhere near home, and don't have the facilities...
I used to do this years ago on a Sunday morning when my husband and I would go out to the local cafe and get breakfast. Certainly don't go out to do it now and the best I do is bacon butties on a Sunday lunchtime for me and my daughter. Did watch the Heston Blumenthal revamp of Little Chef earlier this year on television and wondered how much things had really improved. I remember as a child that this is the place we would stop if we were travelling any great distance. It always used to be a treat but I am sure that it is far more expensive now to eat there than your local cafe.
I remember little chef being a treat! How ridiculous is that now? It's got to be the worst place to stop. I saw the HB thing as well and the bloke in charge was not up for any of the changes HB suggested.
things are not what they used to be
No idea if it has had any improvement as a result of his input as it has been a very long time since I went there. As others have said you can do a really good fry up in the comfort of your own home for very little.
haha, my mothers!! She'd kill me for saying that. But she really does cook the most amazing breakfast. If I could pick anywhere it would be when I went on holiday when I was younger. Everything, every last detail was perfect.
Locally though, mum =), but failing that, there is an okay one round the corner at sainsburys cafe.
And to add to that, where I find a nice one in a place I'm not sure of, it has to be trial and error. Occasionally I'll ask a local where they can recommend, but most of the time I'll make my own opinion of where I find.
Sainsburys cafe, boo!! Support your local cafe :)
I will try, I promise!! =). I do prefer local cafe's than to chains. But there's not really any other option where I live. I think it'd be a 20 minute walk to the nearest cafe.
Will def think about it more though, thanks.
The best places used to be 'transport cafes', not sure if they exist these days! Locally, we had a lovely cafe that did the best fry ups, no frills in the decor, just good fresh food well cooked by the Italian owner. Sadly, he's now retired, and i miss him!
Transport cafes do still exist but sadly they are few and far between these days :(
That's the great thing about small cafes they are not necessarily the most stylish place to eat but they have their charm and offer good food (in my opinion) at a reasonable price. It does sadden me when another cafe closes.
The only fry-ups I have are when I'm staying in a B&B. Personal favourite has to be the Royal Oak in Bowness.
i'd generally get the stuff from adsa or tesco and cook myself.
If i'm staying away i'll walk down the high street and see whats about.
There used to be a truckers cafe just outside Warminster which was fab, I moved away years ago so don't know if it's still there. Sadly I haven't found a local cafe near my home for a good fry-up, it's mostly pub food and fish n chips :( There's none showing on your fry-up website near me either, so I guess for now it's me in the kitchen wielding a frying pan.
Why not scout one out near you and add it?
Been trying to find one, but no luck so far. I will be sure to add any I do find though.
The old transport cafe was the best they are still about but few and far between. Don't know of any web sites but I will be having a look at www.fryup.net
Looks like it could be a good site it just looks like it needs more contributors
hey mark after your question i decided to do a fry up today had all the things in so did not have to spend, it was very very nice you did not turn up though( a well your loss) he he he
Gutted!! Hope none of it went to waste :)
well you know me nothing goes to waste, for inst we had cod loin cheesy mash an peas for tea, my husband did not get home for tea as on call, so now we have 5 very yummy fish cakes for tea tomorrow!!!
That's a good question and I love a good trad english breakfast and wherever I go in the UK, and its usually by train, I normally find one very close to the local railway station (tube or mainline). I haven't had a bad breakfast yet!
You can usually find a good old greasy spoon near a train station. Sounds like you have a fry up fairly regularly maybe you should sign up with www.fryup.net

Good to hear there are some good locally to you. I quite often see snack bars in local laybys and it's good to see this as I would rather use these than stop at the rip of chain restaurants/services. If you were in a different town and didn't have word of mouth how would you find out where to go?
would need to use commom sense and ask or take a chance and try a local cafe, I suppose if you walk by and there are people in there having food, should be reasonable
Best way of judging if a snack bar/mobile kitchen is good, is to see how many lorry/van drivers are using it...they know the good ones!
