I'm sure I read somewhere that if your house has less people living in it than it has bedrooms, then you could save money by having a meter fitted, though quite how that was worked out I am not sure. There is a page on the moneysavingexpert about water meters http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/cut-water-bills that may be useful - that site is useful for so many things.

This was discussed in an earlier thread. I live in a 3 bedroom property with two pwople living in it. I have requested a water meter only to be told that they are unable to fit one as the actual place where the water pipes come into our property cannot be established and therefore a meter cannot be sited at that point. However, I told the man from the waterboard and he made a note of this and said that we would be placed on a lower tariff. So it might be worth discussing this with your regional water company.

We had a 3 bedroom house with 2 adults and one child and I can tell you it saved us money, we have down sized to a 2 bedroom and we have had one fitted and we are saving money. Once you have one fitted you become more aware of what water you are using, or should I say wasting. Worth considering and if you get in touch with the water board they will send you forms to fill in and they work out if it's worth you getting one. Once fitted they can always remove it, but I'm certain you will save money.

I wonder if the water meter makes people use less water, so therefore they are using less so their bill is lower, OR if they carried on as before and didn't make any changes to their water usage, would the bill still be lower?????

Yes we have a water meter and have done for over 12 years. Best way - as you only pay for what you use.

well that is a good way of looking at it

Yes it is. My mother in law isnt on a meter and when she comes round and runs tap for a drink of cold water i tell her she is wasting water! Plus i always keep cold water in the fridge, as you spend a couple of minutes running the tap so it is a waste.

Yes it was in our house when we bought it, but at the time we had the choice of keeping it or changing to water rates. We asked for a quote for the rates and it was a lot more than we are paying. Our bill is around £65 per quarter at the moment.
I think we are reasonably careful with water, I got some water saving devices free from Yorkshire Water, think this helps.

that does not sound to expensive

I definitely have saved an awful lot of money on having my meeter fitted. I live in a 3 bedroom house with my school aged son. As they have a "Standard Chart" based on the number of bedrooms, not the number of people, for the non-meetered users, it saves us loads.

I don't know if we've used less water though, but definitely become more aware of what we do use :o)

Besides, if you get one fitted, you have a year to decide if you want to keep it or go back to un-meetered, so you can never loose out on it really :o)

PS. there was a post in the last week to 10 days on the same subject, you can find plenty more answers on that thread...

by smartcar, 1 year ago

Yes, very good that they give you a year to evaluate if you would save money on it or not :o)

Water meters will save you much more money than non-water meters as long as you use this oh so important commodity water wisely.
