I had a doctored bank statement used to open two mobile phone contracts. The bank statement never arrived and I contacted my bank, they sent me out another one and I didn't think anything of it. Then one day I received a marketing mailer addressed to the correct surname but the wrong first initial. I contacted T-Mobile to ask them to remove my details from their marketing database only to be told that I was a customer and this is something I had agreed to when I took out the contracts. Upon challenging this further I was passed through to their customer relations department who informed me that in the space of 24 hours I had run up two bills totalling £2,900 calling Africa and they wanted the money from me. This was about 13 years ago before ID fraud was 'fashionable'. To cut a very long story short and believe me this dragged on for months. The police never investigated this. I went personally to the shop and asked to see the documentation that was used to open the accounts, which had vanished and the employee who had opened the accounts no longer worked for the company. T-Mobile reluctantly accepted my story but I still believe that somewhere on some file it says that I opened two accounts ran up a huge bill and then claimed it was fraud.

I'M very sorry to hear that the police didn't investigate it Parchester. They should have done. It sounds like you ended up having to do their job for them. It is still ongoing as far as I am aware and it is very common practice to state that you have had an account opened fraudulently in your name and a massive bill run up and that it must be because you lost your wallet/purse several weeks ago and didn't think to report it at the time. Unfortunately the perpetrators are the usually one and the same and have found it a very easy an affective way of getting their extortionate mobile phone bills that they have run up themselves paid for. They don't even need to steal anyone else's identity because they claim it is themselves that have been the victims of a fraud!!

Well thats good to know that it can be easy to get your money back

Yes to be fair the banks are usually quite good on refunding monies that have been obtained from your accounts fraudulently.

No not personally but I am aware that this happens to a lot of people and it should be a relatively straightforward procedure to get the monies refunded, but a very unpleasant experience nonetheless.

I had some fraudulent transactions with my credit card once but that was it. The bank refunded them as soon as I reported it so I was quite lucky. I know it can be a lot worse for others though. I'm amazed at how they manage to do it but I understand it's big business for the crooks.

Just remembered that I turned up for work once and there was a bloke at my desk that looked just like me. I challenged him and he made good with his legs. The same day when I got home the same bloke was relaxing in my favourite chair and wearing my slippers. I chased him off again and reported it to the police. They didn't seem that interested to be honest, I haven't seen him since.

The brings me back to the film, The Net with Sandra Bullock. I hope I am never a victim of such issues.
I can't begin to imagine what that person must go through. The closet for me was money stolen from my account.
