What will you be buying before January 4th VAT increase?

by , 1 year agoOpen Question

As we all know VAT will increase from 17.5% to 20% on January 4th 2011. Do people intend to make large purcahses and if so what, before this increase is applied?

A property, a TV, not much else... depends on if there are some really stuning bargains! My mother's birthday present which is planned and is in the early new year ditto some other things like that. It is really about planning ahead to make the savings.

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

Which is why I'm raising it now. To be a savvy shopper means planning ahead. People will focus purely upon getting Christmas out of the way but use now and the new year savings to get the bargains for all those birthdays the year ahead!

by Parchester, 1 year ago

Absolutely. It pays to plan ahead.

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

it pay's to shop around that is how you can grab all the best bargains

We will need to get a new tv but i cant say i am going to rush out just cos the VAT is going up cos i cant afford to buy it before the hike anyway - would end up paying for it on credit card then paying interest as i wouldnt be able to pay it in full. So interest v hike is not much different for me.

When you are looking for that TV do have a look at Richer Sounds. They do excellent deals on TV's and are very competitively priced.

by Parchester, 1 year ago

Yes i have heard of them will check with them too. Thank you.

by NTB, 1 year ago

very sensible NTB! its a good point about interest rates of buying on credit taking the value of VAT rise anyway.

by katkity, 1 year ago

I just feel there is not point rushing out to get something that i cant afford at the moment - i get a bonus from work in march so might get one then.

Thinking of buying a new TV, should be able to get one in the sales before the increase, although I wonder if some firms will swallow the increase for a while?

by ladyjune, 1 year ago

do you mean like john lewis did when it went back upto 17.5%? That would also be nice! :)

by katkity, 1 year ago

new bedroom and downstairs bathroom!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

wow a lot of work also

by smartcar, 1 year ago

Hopefully NOT a new television but definitely a laptop/netbook for my daughter. Have been having a look at some this afternoon on the internet to get a general idea of cost but will have to seek the expert advice of my brother before I purchase anything as I am not really sure what I should be looking for.

by frenchwoodgirl, 1 year ago

:( have you considered hitting it?

by katkity, 1 year ago

Yes, haven't got one at the moment....currently at a tv repair shop.

by frenchwoodgirl, 1 year ago

by katkity, 1 year ago

Nothing in particular. we have a heavy spending time right now with the new house so won't have any spare money for the forseeable future anyway.

by roseangel, 1 year ago

i hope you are happy in your new home

by smartcar, 1 year ago

We plan to have our radiators changed and the living areas re-plastered. Hopefully before this date to avoid the extra cost

a lot of work good luck with it

I've just bought a new washing machine for that reason. It was still functional, but getting on a bit, so decided to replace now rather than later. I also replaced my main tv for the same reason. I'm now looking at replacing my laptop. That will be all i think, as just doing some of the things i rely on really.

by fruitcake, 1 year ago

by katkity, 1 year ago

lol pink will probably come back into fashion when i finally get rid!

by eileeng, 1 year ago

If some good deals come up in the TV range then possibly a new TV and perhaps a new washing machine as the one I got now is getting on a bit.

by Noddy1, 1 year ago

I wouldnt go out of my way to buy something. If I needed something, then yes I would make sure I brought it before january.

I will try to avoid any panic buying ahead of the VAT increase and only buy items that I need or had planned to buy. It would be easy to get carried away and to think - "I must buy this and that", but in reality unless it is a big purchase the sums saved are not huge and you may well be better off making that washing machine or TV last another couple of years.

by Sidesalad, 1 year ago

The increases aren't huge but it was interesting to see the near panic buying levels just before the rate went from 15% to 17.5% at the start of this year. However, I feel there is a principle here, I don't see why I need to give another £40 of my money in taxes.

by Parchester, 1 year ago

Yes - you are right about not wanting to pay any mre in taxes.

by Sidesalad, 1 year ago

mine will be my tv decided i think on the samsung then nothing else
