I go to a few classes (yoga etc) each week. I believe this helps me to stay physically and mentally healthy. I also cycle a lot. Do you think this is luxury or necessity?
I think if you enjoy it you should do it. I certainly don't think paying for yoga is a luxury. It is much more important to keep healthy than to be better off. And presumably Yoga isn't breaking the bank. But it is important to budget for everything you spend money on so that includes yoga and bicyle repairs.
haha, definately out of necessity!! Without a budget I think I'd go bankrupt. I need to be organised so that I know exactly what I can spend on what day and where.
Cycling? Well, it totally depends why you do it. If you are doing it to get to work then necessity. If you're doing it to keep fit or have no real motive behind it, then exercise. I wouldn't really call cycling a luxury though. A luxury for transportation would be more like a chauffeur...
Haha! That's subjective surely - i love it! My way of relaxing :).
yep, of course, =P.
I hate cycling, it winds me up more. I get more stressed when I return than when I leave, so I just don't do it anymore!!
Staying fit and healthy isn't a necessity or a luxury but it's a great thing to do. I have taken up running and once you have a decent pair of trainers it's pretty cheap and for me I wouldn't like going to the gym (cost and it's not for me). Also, I've been looking to enter some races for fun and to give me something to aim for and most of them raise money for charity so everyone is a winner!
Yes, i just did a cycling charity bike ride - it was great! Like you I don't like the gym either - like to get outdoors. So once you got the kit it's a cheap hobbie :)
I've been toying with investing in a good bike as well. Years ago I used to cycle everywhere and it was great.
If you are working you could make use of a tax free bicycle to work scheme. Some of them are very good. If you're employer is not already involved you could encourage them to get involved.
Yes, i budget for dance classes. Had four years of belly dance classes. To me, exercise is vital for health and fitness, so it's a necessity in that sense, but i also love it, it's fun and i've made great friends through it, so it's also a luxury!
No, I don't budget for it at all. But the problem then is that I do very little. I do try to go for walks but if the weather's bad....... Perhaps if I were paying for something I would feel I had to go and would therefore be fitter and healthier.
That's very true, otherwise you feel like you're wasting your money!!
I have to pay for my classes up front, which means I have to budget for them. It's also a really good incentive to make me go!
A cycle to work scheme is a great incentive for employees, and companies can save money too - every bike processed through the scheme means an employer's National Insurance saving. Everybody wins, and it's time to let your employer know!
I purchased a cross-trainer because I consider it a necessity and it worked out to be about the same price as a one-year gym membership.
I have previously had gym membership but found I wasn't really getting the most out of it for the money it was costing me. I like to keep fit though and a lot of my exercise comes from being out in the garden, whether it is mowing the lawn, digging, pruning, it can be pretty good exercise and it doesn't cost anything! For me joining a gym again would be a luxury and certainly not a necessity as there are so many things that do not cost a thing when it comes to keeping fit.
I think its personal - some people like to run which really only costs for a pair of trainers once per year and some clothing. For me, I prefer the gym and for my health and mental wellbeing, I feel better if I go so its in my budget.
I split my budget sheet into necessities (e.g. finance commitments, council tax, household bills etc), then other spending which is listed in order of importance so I can see each month if things are tight, which I can consider not doing for that month - the gym membership is near the top though!
We pay for a gym subscription, that includes exercise classes. I try to do pilates twice a week. We paid for the year upfront as it was cheaper than paying monthly, so I suppose we do budget for it.
i think the gym is a personal preference, me i prefer to do my excersize outside i walk a lot have 2 dogs, we go to the beach every week and the woods in the week to me i would say it is a luxury
But luxury in the sense that it makes you feel good rather than a financial luxury :)..
hey yes i know what you mean i get the same feeling from walking
I would say it is a bit of both. For me it is a necessity after a hip operation as I need to work my muscles in the gym and swimming is a great way to tone the muscles. It is also a luxury as I am a member of a luxurious health club which helps to make the whole experience more worth while as you are in great surroundings whilst using up-to-date equipment that is kept in great condition. It really depends on whether you can afford it at the end of the day!
Wow sounds like an awsome place we all deserve things like this in our lives sounds like it does you a world of good enjoy life's too short to worry
Exercise is about a self-discipline. Some people have it and are able to stick to an exercise regeime that doesn't cost them a penny. Others need the structure of a formal environment to be disciplined within. Me, I'm happy being the way I am. The little aches and pains take a little longer to disappear as you get older but I still have an active and creative mind.
For me personally, I like to exercise to try to stay healthy, I prefer the outdoors, and open spaces, and am currently cycling where possible, although lots of hills in our area, so a good workout. The cost of a gym would be too much for me.
For me exercise is a necessity. For my sense of well-being, for relaxing and keeping fit. Yoga is very much an exercise to make sure I keep mobile and don't just let my body deteriorate.
All exercise seems to need some form of expenditure whether it is a helmet for cycling, waterproof clothing for , swimming costumes even if you swim for free, never mind gym subscriptions or pilates/yoga/dance/etc class payments.
If you have the will power to not stray you could do yoga at home and save money, but often the gym can give you the motivation you need. I think staying healthy is a necessity, and if you can afford it the gym is a luxury that you should deprive yourself of.
I don't budget for exercise i feel i get alot of it with two small boys. Plus i have taken to cycling to work as cheaper. Plus i get to work quicker that if waiting for the bus. We walk quite a few places and i try and walk to the local supermarkets to avoid using car etc.
Budgeting for gym membership is really important to me. It's expensive but I love doing classes and swimming and really get a lot out of it. In the summer it is much easier to get out on a bike or to walk or run, but I hate doing that in the winter. Exercise is very important to physical and mental health and classes ensure that all muscle groups are worked in an orderly and safe way. It is a luxury and I'm sure that if and when my budget no longer allows me to have gym membership I will find other ways to keep fit. But until then I will keep it going.

I agree. My main priority is to be healthy. However, that could mean I would decide not to buy a new bicycle if I was skint. The worry wouldn't be worth it - worry is not good for health! It's all a balance I guess...
balance... exactly... and that is different for each one of us. And the quickest way to become unhealthy is to spend and get into debt. The stress is very difficult to deal with.
I think gym membership is not a luxury but obviously don't go overboard with joining an expensive one unless you can afford it! Exercise is a great way of dealing with stress and this is so important. I also save money by being a member of a gym because my alternative would be going to the pub more often!
Cycling will become a necessiaty in the future unless an alternative cheaper fuel is found!
You can run a car for 50p a gallow or even free - I posted a question a while ago but it didnt get much response. You can run your car only vegetable oil which local chipshops and chinese restaurants are only too happy to give away free!
Surprisingly I didnt get many responses - I guess its just too much effort for most people and a worry ... oh and you need a diesel car to use it!
Don't you have to adapt or modify your engine in a particular way to facilitate the different fuel source?
No there are certain models you can add it to like VW and Mercedes directly.
Its always good to mix a 100ml or more of paraffin to - there are other mixtures.
If its new oil no need to filter or add paraffin.
Its when the oil is used ie chippy shop stuff you need to add thinners and filter all the burnt chip bits n bobs out.
There are some interesting discussions online about it and my post gives a bit more info as well!
