Anyone know any good charity sites that help charities as well as providing good service?

by , 1 year agoClosed Question

I recently sent flowers through cancer research and they were lovely and money went to the charity, so got me thinking this might be a way to give when spending.

I like to use World Vision. Your gift recipient only gets a card but it's a great cause. The flowers sound like a great idea so will mention it to my missus, she sends flowers sometimes and as it's a good cause even better.

saw some of their work in Uganda in the North was impressive and low on costs for workers.

I use World Vision quite a bit too. It's a good charity.

Unless the price is the same or better than buying from other sites, you are better buying from other sites and making a Gift Aid donation to the charity (no matter how small the difference they can and will claim the Gift Aid)

the flowers were cheaper than marks or interflora and nicer!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

Then that is excellent value and you were able to benefit a charity as well so doubly good news. Can you put a link to the site you used?

by Susancrane, 1 year ago

how do I do that?

I lost my daughter at 18 with cancer and this charity were so helpfull and are always in need of help.

Every day 10 families are told their child has cancer. As the UK's leading children's cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is the only organisation to offer them all round care and support. That?s because we?re there every step of the way:

During treatment ? providing specialist nurses, play specialists, Homes from Home

In hospital & at home ? offering specialist social care and support in the community ? services for young people, holidays, grants, helpline

After treatment ? helping survivors, supporting those bereaved

so sorry to hear this . the war against cancer is being fought so bravely by many and we all need to help where we can!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

you are so right it is a terrible thing we and she had to go through and still lost her fight in the end

by smartcar, 1 year ago

That's awful, I'm so sorry, =(. It must be an absolutely horrible experience to go through and no one can know how they'd react until they find themselved in that situation. I always donate to cancer charities after losing my nan to cancer last christmas.

My wife recently sent her friend a gift from www.thegreenoffice.co.uk. Its for breast cancer, all pink products, quite nice actually, also one year someone got me a goat from Oxfam! Obviously not for me as such, but thought it was a great idea, you can put together a wish list (almost like a wedding list) and have it emailed to your friends.

by Member-4345, 1 year ago

did the goat thing and others from unicef, family didnt seem impressed!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

No, my sisters don't like them as gifts but my mum loves it. She doesn't need any more material possessions so likes to think that she's helping people plant crops etc.

by roseangel, 1 year ago

Yes it has been a more recent trend with the big charities... you donate an chooes e.g. the goat and in effect the charities who do not look after people (kids older peole) had to think of their version of sponor a child. The goat is bought for a person in the developing world to help them become self sufficient, great really

Yes, as some of you know, i work for Oxfam, and this gift scheme (known as Oxfam Unwrapped) is incredibly popular! As roseangel said below, many elderly people really like these gifts as they often already possess all the things they want. A lot of workplaces club together at Xmas and buy one of the more expensive gifts instead of having to do the 'secret santa' thing which most people detest! Also classes of schoolchildren get together and buy a related gift, such as packs of schoolbooks, as part of their learning about other countries. It's also extremely popular with students who are really into buying the eco-warrior gifts!

Yes, i buy a lot of these for friends and family. They are always gratefully received. I think it's a great idea.

Have a look at http://www.thegivingmachine.co.uk/

They donate a percentage of the cost of a sale to a charity, without making the cost higher for you.

I like the Children's Society online shop as they support goods that have been ethically made and fairly traded and it means that money is being paid to the families that actually produce the goods and helps support low employment or under privileged communities in the UK and other parts of the world.

by frenchwoodgirl, 1 year ago

Yes there is charity flowers profits go to a range of member charities. Anything you buy from a charity shop goes towards the service side of a charity's work. Many have new goods as well as second hand. Buying insurance through Age uk means you are supporting the charity and you may be able to give someone a present of pet insurance for example. And sidesalad is right there are three companies that sell cards on behalf of charities. But of course you can support the charity of your choice by buying their Xmas cards. Most of the big charities have their own.

I simply use cancer research. After members of my family have died from cancer, I find that is the only way of making me feel a bit better, by donating to the charity that will work hard to reduce the illness where possible.

by ryancarte, 1 year ago

they have a shop online too that is where I got my lovely flowers and the charity got some of the profit!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

Really? I knew that there were shops around the country, but thank you for making me aware of online shops. Shopping online can sometimes be more convenient - but it'd be good to know that my purchases were helping a good cause.

One way to help charities if you are going to use Amazon is to go to your favourite charity site and see if it has a click through to Amazon. The charity gets a payment from Amazon for this. I think they also earn a payment from any other links on their site.

by Susancrane, 1 year ago

Another way is to use different search engines, there are details on this page http://www.squidoo.com/searchforcharity

by Susancrane, 1 year ago

This site gives lots of ways of helping charities from having specific credit cards, donating vouchers to charities, recycling etc http://www.days.org.uk/

by Susancrane, 1 year ago

i wish i had heard befoe about the cancer research flowers! i would have used them for a family funeral. also there are the usual culprits: gifts catalogues where most of the money goes to charity, specific auctions and events where the money raised goes to charity and some sites have specific days that put money to charity.
