Anyone ever bought something strange at an auction just because!

by , 1 year agoClosed Question

Just back from local auction and got several needed bargains plus on 3ft high porcelain crested crane!Reason being it is the national bird of Uganda and I lived there for a while!
no idea what to do with it now but seemed a good idea at the time.

At a charity auction I bought a miners lamp great I thought that will pair up nice with my other one. When I got it home it turned out to be my original that unknown to me my wife had donated. I was gutted.

by Noddy1, 1 year ago

so funny!!!!! you were obviously meant ot keep that lamp. You still got it?

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

Still got it and manage to buy another one they make a great pair.

by Noddy1, 1 year ago

Haha! I love it. I once bought an old fashioned sewing machine cause i like the way it looked but I hate sewing!

Auctions can be great places to get a bargin, if you have the time

by Rosie, 1 year ago

hey what did you do with the sewing machine? sounds as bad as my walking stick

by smartcar, 1 year ago

I've still got it - embarrisingly it's been used as a bed side table (it's in a nice box :)). Still cheap table - lol!

by Rosie, 1 year ago

didnt even mention the really ugly lamps!!they looked nice in the auction,

I haven't from an auction house but have on Ebay just because I have liked something. Got a fantastic 1960's original Italian dining set with a glass top and steel base with 6 fantastic retro looking chairs which was one of those things I just really had to have!! And at an excellent price too...whilst a dining set may not be classed as 'unusual' everyone always comments on it and asks where I got it from. Do you have a conservatory your crane could go in or even in the garden maybe.

by frenchwoodgirl, 1 year ago

sounds like you got some bargains

by smartcar, 1 year ago

Have had a few and at the end of the day something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

by frenchwoodgirl, 1 year ago

he/she is already placed in the veg patch and the chickens are looking a little wary!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

There's been the odd ocassion on ebay when i've got carried away trying to win something and paid more than I really wanted to or what it was actually worth.

by -Nic-, 1 year ago

been there done that too!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

i bought a walking stick once from an auction don't know why i don't need one, i thought it was worth something and found, it was not even worth the £10.00 i paid for it silly me

by smartcar, 1 year ago

no somewhere deep inside you know you had to buy it maybe just because you didnt need it!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

That's a good warning about going to auctions - make sure you know why you are going and what you are after and what you are prepared to pay. i.e. be prepared. The danger is however, that if you don't get what you really wanted you could buy something you don't need just because you want to feel it was worthwhile going?

by donk, 1 year ago

toooooooooooooo sensible.

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

No I haven't but I love the idea of your crested crane! A bit of serendipity in life really cheers you up doesn't it? By the way - I assume it wasn't hugely expensive and that you've really blown your budget. Had you not bought it you would have regretted it for weeks. Good for you!

by Sidesalad, 1 year ago

thats a good point maybe i bought the walking stick cos i did not want to think i had judt wasted 2 hours of my life mmmm you could well be right

by smartcar, 1 year ago

so true just put photos on facebook and it has already brought joy to others!!Mainly at my expense but hey joy is joy.

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

Excellent!!

by Sidesalad, 1 year ago

Only ever bought useful things, at auction, eg furniture, and kitchen type stuff. Its easy to get carried away with bidding.

by lakes, 1 year ago

i carried away my walking stick mmm maybe one day i will need it he he he

by smartcar, 1 year ago

I always get carried away...

by ryancarte, 1 year ago

so sensible!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

ryancarte, maybe thats why you need the wheel barrow?

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

I love buying things from auctions that are so pointless! The once I bought a wheelbarrow. No idea why, just started putting up my hand and never stopped! Didn't even get it home which was the funny part. I brought it back, girlfriend killed me, so I gave it to the neighbour instead...

by ryancarte, 1 year ago

somewhere deep inside you know you needed that wheelbarrow.

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

Well that was similar to my argument when I got it home but the girlfriend wasn't having any of it!!!

by ryancarte, 1 year ago

If you really like the look of your crane it won't be wasted because you'll enjoy looking at it. Not everything in life has to have a purpose, sometimes things can just be bought for pleasure. Just never use your essentials money on them.

by roseangel, 1 year ago

so true, I feel better already

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

But its fun and sometimes if you have an eye you can buy something you like and discover that it is worth something. Always buy quality china brass whatever it is that looks like good workmenship and you are half way ther. Alternatively if you just love have it.!

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

Is that the weirdest item you've ever bought from an auction? Or have you bought something worse??

by ryancarte, 1 year ago

i am sure there is someone out there who has bought something much more weird

by smartcar, 1 year ago

my nephew sold himself at an auction but i didnt enquire too deeply.

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

haha! How old was he at the time?? I'm presuming for charity or as a joke at the very least???

by ryancarte, 1 year ago

student!!!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

Ah, that explains it! So did someone actually buy him? That would probably be the strangest thing they've ever bought at an auction - a person!

by ryancarte, 1 year ago

Never bought anything I didn't want or plan to buy.

Was surprised once at the way things went. My father and I put in five things into auction, all of little or no value. His two things were ordinary domestic items of everyday use, mine wasere an old fencing foil; a fencing face guard and a fencing jacket. I had bought them all very cheap second hand and used them for several years. He got next to nothing for his items, I made a substantial profit on my items. This was despite the sale taking place in a quiet country town where there was no fencing class.

by Susancrane, 1 year ago

oh i might have bought these if they had been there!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

Oh I do so wish I had read my answer properly before leaving it. 'mine wasere' should read 'mine were'.

by Susancrane, 1 year ago

thought it was olde English! reads like it.

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

I've never been to a proper auction. I'd like to but would be a bit scared I would get carried away.

I've come close to buying bizarre stuff on eBAY when drunk and have been glad I didn't the next day!! An example that springs to mind is a set of bagpipes (I'm not Scottish and I can't play them)!

by MarkX, 1 year ago

Mark who knows you might have had a completely new musical career!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

I'll never know now, I have doubts though :)

by MarkX, 1 year ago

Can't say. My wife bought a dinner set with lots of missing pieces because she like the shape of the cups - why would anyone want a second hand, incomplete dinner set?

by Member-4345, 1 year ago

are you asking me De Vale, me of the creted crane!!!???

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

Does a somewhat battered head of a cyberman count as strange?

by fruitcake, 1 year ago

depends how battered and by whom!

by jajajanie, 1 year ago

Ah well, as to whom by...i knoweth not!

by fruitcake, 1 year ago

Friend of mine bought a set of all in one motorbike leathers. He doesn't own a motorbike!!!

by scottie, 1 year ago

A beautiful wall clock in a wooden case that I haven't been able to get to work but it looks lovely on the wall and the plus side is it's right twice a day!!
