I am a regular user of HMV.com and notice how much cheaper their products are to buy online than through their shops. There can be a difference of between £3-£5 on DVD's,boxsets and music. They appear also to be taking on iTunes in the cost of downloads e.g Scissor Sisters, Night Work album on iTunes is £7.99 and on HMV £4.99. Can anyone recommend any other affordable media/entertainment sites, which are legal?
Hi Parchester, I asked a similar question last week and was giving the following sites:
4shared.com
Beemp3.com
Amazon - currently have a sale on
HMV on the web have been really competitive for a couple of years now and rival Play for value. I regularly use HMV for this reason and have always found the store to be more expensive. Recently our local HMV has become a store of everything (mobile phones, musical instruments and other varied items) rather than focus on music and film and this does not appeal to me.
If I want to buy music/film I usually compare prices between HMV, Play, Amazon, eBay, CDWow and CD101. I'm a bit old fashioned in that I prefer to have a real copy rather than a digital version.
have you looked on www.walmart.com i had some very good prices for music downloads early this year been on economy drive since so not checked them out since if you look let me know how you get on
Amazon are pretty good and have a sale going at the moment.
Hi Parchester my very good friend downloads dozens of films and gave me this site Extratorrent.com for films
Nerovision for burning onto DVD and
DVDsanta but he says this one is less good quality and slower
Haven't used them myself yet but I trust him absolutely.
I've heard this is a good site, so interesting to hear someone else recommend it.
Which one Extratorrent?
I just looked up Extratorrent and it came up with loads of scam warnings! Also, it looks as though it's at the very least an illegal filesharing site.
iTunes do movies online now too which are quite competitively priced. Plus you already know they do music too. iTunes prices are very good.
Probably not the cheap-est, but still quite cheap.
Have a look at muzic.com
play.com sells dvds etc really cheaply. i dont know much about downloading music but it costs 79p to dowload a track
This site is totally free: http://beemp3.com/
Personally, I always use http://www.find-dvd.co.uk and http://www.find-cd.co.uk
Price comparison sites.
I have used Limewire in the past to download music, but I am not sure if this is legal or not. Downloading is a bit of a grey area for me.
I had cut an intersting article from the Guardian 25/04/09 (amazing the rubbish I have on my desk)on downloading music which I have just stumbled on. They mention 7 digital allows buy per song; napster you need media player; Amazon cut prices and Playlouder is another.
deezer.com allows you to stream audio free without downloading so you can listen on the your pc.
I always use LimeWire but I don't download a massive amount. However, technically I suppose I am breaking the law, but for the record labels to actively pursue and prosecute everyone guilty of making downloads in this way would be impossible and would cost far more in court costs. There are maybe those that abuse the system in order to try and make some financial gain but I think most people just want to download tracks that for use on their own computer. I have used Play.Com for buying dvds etc and know they have pretty good prices for music downloads and it would be totally legal.
I would say to keep clear of illegal sites, Although you will not be caught it is still illegal, Its the same with downloading films etc. Its stealing from the pockets of the people that make them. Although the top dogs can afford this is runs through the entire company to the people on a lower wage. You may not think its much but if everyone does it...
French,
Please be careful. There will come a time, where you may receive a letter. I used to use limewire and download about 20 songs per month.
Until I received a letter from BT..
That warning was enough for me.
A good legal site is Grooveshark, you can't download songs but you set up an account and save playlists that you can stream from the net for free.
Apple have an app you can get that if you scan the bar code of the product you want it will search for the cheapest place you can get that product: both online and in stores, it is abit annoying though you cant just go out and buy something as you are constantly aware you could have saved a few pounds!!
I use Amazon and when I compare prices, they do seem to be cheaper than the rest. There are also freebies from time to time and whilst alot of these are old tunes, there are sometimes some real gems.

I did a search and couldn't find any questions or answers to this. Thanks for the info. I tend to find Amazon so very expensive. Items I have bought in the Poundshop are being sold by Amazon for £11.99+!!
No worries about the searches... I have had the same problems. Maybe it's something that will improve on the site given time! We are only beta testing
loads of sites here I've not seen before, thanks all
