With the more than likely increases in petrol prices. Here are some tips to conserving fuel.

Shift to a higher gear as soon as possible. Driving at lower engine speeds reduces fuel consumption.
Anticipate road conditions and drive more smoothly. Try to avoid last minute braking by releasing accelerator as early as possible.
Maintain a steady speed in as high a gear as possible.
Drive a little slower than your normal speed. Stick to speed limits. For most cars the most efficient speed is 45-50mph. The faster you go above this speed the more fuel you'll use.
When driving along motorways close all windows to reduce the drag, which forces the engine to rev more thus using more fuel.
Keep your tyres at optimum pressure. Under inflated tyres lead to poor road holding and increased fuel consumption. I'm sure there are many more, which please add to this page to help build a comprehensive guide to reducing fuel consumption. Over to you.....

If your going to the shops (not doing your weekly shop) and they are close, walk rather than take your car - you'll probably save on parking as well.
See if you have someone at work that you can car share with. You can halve your weekly petrol costs then if you share the driving.

Very good points!

If you're not using them remove roof bars and boxes as they reduce drag and increase fuel consumption.

by MarkX, 1 year ago

also not having those awful flags on your car will also reduce drag

by Sporty, 1 year ago

That's not the only reason for removing the flags!

A good money saving tip is don't buy them in the first place?!

Roof bars or cars? Some people need cars (and roof bars).

I also heard that air conditioning uses up quite a lot of fuel so I try to use it as little as possible

by vinnynice, 1 year ago

It uses a lot!!

by -Nic-, 1 year ago

Good point, I never use mine for that reason

by MarkX, 1 year ago

I turn it on for a few minutes to cool the air in the car then turn it off rather than leaving it on all the time.

Petrol expands with heat, so avoid filling up on hot days if you can or fill up early in the morning. You'll get more for your money. Also, fill up slowly as this will reduce air bubbles which also increase the mass.

by Sulouli, 1 year ago

Sorry, this is not meant to be a cheeky question, Sulouli, but how do you 'fill up slowly?' Do you mean do a start/stop thing?

by fruitcake, 1 year ago

Rather than pulling the trigger of the pump as hard as you can, just pull it in slightly. You will easily notice the slower flow a the pump numbers will move more slowly. Does feel like you're wasting your life as you wait for the tank to fill up though!

by Sulouli, 1 year ago

Sorry, I dont understand - surely all this is doing is getting more fuel in your tank so you'll buy more fuel.

after driving to and from work all week,im only to glad to walk at the weekends, and forget about the car

by blondie, 1 year ago

Try car sharing, it will reduce the cost of fuel and parking, and also help the environment. Can you work from home a few days a week, or go in on flexi-time, less time spent queuing in the rush hour will conserve more fuel and also help on emissions.
