My wife is expecting our second child at the end of September and has suggested a short break to the Lakes after the baby is born. I know it's not a great time of year but it's only a couple of hours drive away from us so not bad for location. I've noticed when I've searched before it can be quite pricey up there, so does anyone have any ideas or recommendations of places to stay?
travel-lodge is handy, to Kendal, central lakes Windermere and Ambleside may be pricey but local B and B can be good. Can give advice as live in area
Once you're out of peak season (so October onwards) the prices should come down, making it cheaper for you. Of course come Christmas prices will rocket again (and half term in October might be more pricey). Think about getting a cottage / renting somewhere rather than a B & B or hotel. It'll probably be nicer for the children as they can run around as much as you want. On the following site in October / November they have cottages for £250 a week.

I'm hoping we'll be able to go away before October half term. Thanks for the cottages suggestion, I've looked on their website before but booked with Hoseasons in the end.
Sykes cottages are good - sykescottages.co.uk
I've used them before and got a reasonable price for a week in the Lakes even over the Christmas period so there should be some bargains for Autumn.
I've heard of them before. Might be quite nice to book with them just for the name if nothing else!
I have booked cottages before but find them quite expensive but had not heard from this one, good to know of a different option
i would put in google hotels in the lakes find one in an area you like then phone up yourself you can get a much better price this way i always do this and get much better deals than online
I've always found the internet for the best prices. I might try and ring them up next time. Thanks smartcar.
youre welcome sykesy hope you have luck just make sure you barter with them
I have tried this option many times and they always refer me to their website to find their best deals, so this approach has never worked for me unfortunately.
Remember to look at the Top cashbac website as Cittages 4 you will pay cashback if you book via their website
What is the top cashback website Shelley?
cashback is a site that you buy something through and get a % of what you spend online back. It is always useful to check if you can buy it through the cashback site before purchasing it online :)
thanks, Shelley2286, I didn't know that you would get cashback when booking cottages4you :)
A cottage is usually the most cost effective option even for a short break. These are usually better as you can relax more and cook your own meals to save money rather than being cramped in a hotel room and having to eat out all the time.
Some of the links provided below are really good and worth checking.
I agree, we've stayed in a cottage a couple of times before.
yeah, it is true. Some of them have great scenary too, and are very cosy and romantic :)
Hi Sykesy21. Have a look at these apartments www.thebowering.co.uk. I looked at these in April of this year when there were all the problems with the ash cloud as we thought we were not going to be able to go to Benalmadena as planned for a hen party. They look fantastic and off peak are very reasonably priced. They are located in the heart of Windermere with everything on your doorstep and I must admit I was quite upset not to be able to go, because at the last minute we were able to travel to Spain. These apartments were a back up plan and I think they would make for a very special holiday. I bookmarked the web site as I know I will definitely be booking to go there in the future. I found them initially on the HomeAwayholiday-rentals web site.
Thanks frenchwoodgirl, that sounds like a great recommendation. Will definitely check it out.
I just checked it out, frenchwoodgirl, they do look good! Another one for me to check for my trip later this year. Thanks :)
I have just come back from the lakes (Bowness) this weekend, and would massively recommend The Hydro Hotel.
It's not the cheapest, admittedly, but the rooms are incredibly spacious and include family suites, the food is excellent, and the staff are incredibly friendly. It would be the perfect place for a family break - very peaceful with stunning views.
it is a very steep hill for anyone pregnant though!!although handy for Bowness, never seen bownessie monster yet, keep looking though
I read that the wife in question would have had the baby by then. I know it might be a bit of an effort pushing a buggy up to the hotel, but I'm not sure it's anything near impossible. Meh, maybe it's been a long time since I pushed a baby around (the brother is six now!). Might have forgotten just how tough it is.
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have a look at the hotel on the internet.

I'm not looking at travelodge anymore after the last one I stayed in. Will look at local B&B's though, thanks.
There is a nice B and B called the Glen at Oxenholme, handy to railway station and the Station Inn very close for meals www.glen-kendal.co.uk
Thanks for the info, lakes, as I was planning to travel there to the area by the end of the year. I will check it out.
