I've heard about it and it is a good idea in principal as it will help combat fraud on the street as even if someone had got hold of your cards they would not be able to use it. Unfortunately this will not alleviate any online fraud as there are just not the systems in place to make this possible and online fraud now accounts for the largest fraudulent activity overall.

I've heard about tests too but have not heard anything about it coming to the UK yet.

Not heard about this, ooeerr, things are getting more scientific all the time, unfortunately as with all systems the fraudsters still manage to find a way. Chip and pin was supposed to be foolproof...need I say more.

Oh no! This just made me visualise how they can get cheat using my retina or fingerprint and I didn't like what came to my mind! Oh dear...

to be fair chip and pin is kind of foolproof

I had not heard of it related to the financial industry at all. I have seen the retina test being used at the airports now and it looked great.

I don't know if I would like this being applied to the financial industry as the way in which fraudsters can cheat the system would be with your own finger, your own eye or making you talk! Ok, I may have seen too many films but I am sure that some will try this approach and I wouldn't want to be their target. Scary thought.

Dozens of financial houses in Japan have added vein scanners to their ATMs in response to legislation making banks liable for withdrawals by criminals using stolen or counterfeit bank cards. More than 20,000 of Japan's 110,000 ATMs have vein scanners

Oh wow! I really had no idea! It would be good to know if there are plans to implement similar systems over here, for sure

not seen it in person but seen it used in films, my brother has a laptop that requires finger print and retinal scanning to turn on but nothing in normal banks , which is strange really

I've seen the fingerprint readers on laptops but wondered what would happen if you sold the laptop on.

have you heard that banks in the UK are using this ?

by Sidesalad, 1 year ago

No I haven't - but I believe the BSI have taken up the initiative to produce a set of biometric security standards for the UK

by donk, 1 year ago

I've not experienced this. Wouldn't it cost loads to implement and maintain? Also, I'm sure the fraudsters would find a way to cheat these, they usually do.

by MarkX, 1 year ago

Yes its expensive but I believe the benefit and motivation for the banks is because of the drastic increase in on-line and ATM fraud

Perhaps its just me, but I do worry about all this retinal scan type stuff. I don't think I want my eyeballs scanned here there and everywhere - who knows what damage it could inflict! And fingerprints too - what if there was some dodgy staff member who could make a copy of your prints, you could get framed for some major crime spree! How could you possibly defend yourself if your fingerprints were all over the crimescene? I can see the security advantages in banks etc but I do worry about the side effects and possible implications.
