Does the new Tesco film business open up opportunities for budding film writers?

by , 1 year agoOpen Question

Yup its true. TESCO has a made its first film an adaptation of a Jackie Collins book to be released on DVD, (PG15) by-passing distributors and cinemas and challenging and whole film industry system. You can see the pattern. Many of us have what others might see as ridiculously huge screens at home. So why go the cinema? Buy the DVD show on a large screen and get the friends and neighbours round. My point is does anyone think that there is now an opening for film writers (not all of whom can get an agent) to approach TESCO direct with a treatment and see what they think? Any film writers here?

I think this is the approach the current government want the arts to go in. They want the private sector to play a greater part in the development of the arts in this country, which is all well and good when you are dealing in popular art forms like film and TV and to a lesser extent certain theatre productions. Great, if like Tesco's, you have the financial investment to offer and the backing. It would be interesting to see how popular an approach this becomes and given the relaxation of product placement how much of Tesco's own products will feature in their films!! The last point fills me with considerable dread!! I should add that if you have a pitch/development or script it would be worth appraoching them but it would appear that they are making populist products based upon the successful sales data of their stores.

The product placement would be horrendous!!

I know! Can you imagine? That will be their 'free' form of advertising right there and then.

I once read that companies pay enormous amounts of money to have their products featured in films as it is proven that sub-consciously we would choose that brand over others after seeing it in the film (well, there is more psychology behind it, but just to summarise :), so we could end up being Tesco 'zombies'. Help!

Unless we decide not to watch those films... ;)

Thanks for your comment abt the Gov. Hadn't thought abt that.

Let's see about product placement... Can the film censorship board can curtail that if it occurs? But they want a commercial product i.e a popular watchable film so they may annoy so many people with pp that they wd kill the business. Let's hope they think that way.

Goodness, is there anything that Tesco won't do? It's getting a bit ridiculous and quite scary!!

Could be a good opening for any film writers, guess it wouldn't hurt to approach them and ask.

So true, I have been fearing this type of Tesco world domination for a while, and decided a long time ago to make my own little contribution by not buying in their supermarkets and their other products.

Every little helps, right? :)

Does anyone have a Teasco contact name or department and telephone number regarding this intriguing new Tesco film business? Well done to Tesco for such great insight!

Every little hurts more like!!

yes just stic to what you are doing

Oh my goodness - Tesco is gradually taking over the world!! I agree with Parchester's worries about product placement and the like and if I were a writer I would be very concerned about their likely editorial restrictions. Doubtless Tesco would take only populist material in the same way they sell only proven products (ie even if new, market data must show that they are likely to succeed).

In the Guardian article it says that TESCO had no product placement nor did they do the catering on the film set

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

Oh and they didn't have any editorial control. To be honest if you think about it they are not really wanting to be in the film business they just see an opportunity to generate DVD sales of a film that will only be distributed by TESCO!

by pmscot93, 1 year ago

so do i

by smartcar, 1 year ago

Well, OK - let's give them the benefit of the doubt, but why don't they just stick to food?

by Sidesalad, 1 year ago

Well, it's not exactly a new idea...soaps are called soaps because when they began they were sponsored totally by soap manufacturers like Lux etc. And they always got their product placements in...even on radio!

Wow! I had no idea! Tesco diversifying into a new business yet again! They know no limits.

Well, ot the point, I am not a film writer but I certainly would try them as an option, specially now that the independent film industry is at such poor state.

However, I agree with some of the comments here regarding the type of film that they would go with so I don't think that they would be a good supporting channel for real independent films.

In any case, I would always try them, why not?

There is a site called coproducer.com that was seeking budding writers. Perhaps they are secretly working for Tesco.

i am a writer of books and think it's a great idea maybe they should consider moving into literature too

I think it's great that DVD production is now becoming the norm of first viewing - premier DVD rather than premiere cinema.
It's a shame that it has to be Tesco's running it, but a British Company bringing further cheap ways of developing entertainment is something we should all be in support of.

I'm not a writer, - by a long a long shot, but I do deal with Carnaby Films and sometime chat to the script writers of certain productions - and I can say that they will surly be looking into Tesco's service.

It's also a great way for those who can't afford an agent to get together and present themselves directly to Tesco's.

Either way.., let's hope it brings us something positive.
