I smoked for a long time and finally quit one year ago on 01st August 2010 - my problems have gone since quitting smoking, im healthier, i have a healthier bank balance. a 20 ciggies a day habit is 2400 pounds per year - not an insignificant sum - there are so many self help books out there, but with some changes in attitude, its easy to quit and change your life for the better.

What's wrong with pointing out the financial benefit of stopping smoking? I'm sure there are lots of members out there, health benefits aside, that would find this a good incentive.
There isn't anything wrong with posting a financial benefit, but is it a question or a success of yours?
i didnt see hayleys question (statement of truth) - actually, i have so many friends and people i know that i send them my emails with all the special offers from money.co.uk but all of them are smokers - anyone on here who is having difficulties with money and still smokes has to look at that. savings increase and its cutting a compulsory expense.....or rather it seems compulsary
Congratulations. I quit 7 years ago and am really glad I did. I have been saving the money I would have spent and have been able to treat myself several times.
nice, thats 2400 x 7 in savings.....wow!!! i know ciggies were maybe 4.50 or 5 quid a packet seven years ago but still. i will be buying myself a treat very soon :)
congrat's. My dad keeps saying he'll be quitting soon, but he never does. It's so difficult apparently and so we have to put up with it, but I don't mind. It's down to the person I suppose. Some people will have the will-power to stop, others will try, but sadly fail. Well done though because it is a lot of money and hopefully you have/will put it towards something nice??
well its not just the financial side of it - the first hour, first day, first 2 days, 3 days, first week, etc, gets easier and easier, each one is a goal - and as time passes, your health is getting better, attitude gets better, i believe within 3 days all nicotine has gone from body, so technically the craving should be gone!!! cos its the nicotine - get your dad to try it for 3 days and during that time your entire family can count with him and support. food never tasted so good!!! and suddenly you have money too :)
I quit 20+ years ago. For the first 12 months I was no healthier but after that my chest cleared up. I was only smoking 10 a day but it seemed that I had to get rid of the coating on my lungs. Still fancy a cigarette occasionally but I would not touch one with a barge pole. I certainly felt better off and it was a giant leap towards balancing the budget and starting saving properly.
my son has quit about 20 times and each one he say's is the one his thoughts are he can't aford it but he always finds the money when he starts again
They won't of course but the extra money will come in handy especially if you put it aside and treat yourself to a holiday or something with the proceeds.
as an add on to this question i boughta ps3 to help me quit and it more than paid fo itself with all the money i have saved since, if you are wondering how it helped it kept my hands busy which was my biggest problem
well, playing on PS3 will be best use of the extra day off we all get when we go four days a week!!!! glad you quit too :)
I just used willpower alone to quit and it was really hard,i did falter a few times but the next day i just started all over again and eventually i wasn't following smokers around breathing in the wafts of smoke behind them. Lol. Saved me a fortune and my clothes,breath and hair don't stink anymore.
I gave up in 2007 only due to being in hospital with a broken neck and spinal fractures. In that condition it was impossible to go outside for a smoke.This was the one good thing that came out of the accident I had.
My partner and I gave up smoking together and saved the money towards a deposit on a house.At first we used to save the money daily and then went to weekly.Our motivation was seeing the balance build up in our savings account . The only downside was that I put on weight because I started eating more . However I felt healthier and fitter as a result of not smoking and am glad to say have now managed to get my weight down. Well done on staying smoke free for 12 months.
I wouldn't even think of the money saving as the main benefit of stopping smoking..the health benefits should be of greater importance. I see some people who have small children smoking around them and I think this is appalling.
you sound like other than the smoking you were a pretty organised, successful, happy person and as long as you have a good base most of your problems will disappear or be weakened by quitting, a friend of mine bought a very nice car when he quit with half the money he would have used on cigs. well done on quitting its hard but worth it!
Thankfully, I have never smoked and have not had to go through the quitting process but I see the cost of cigarettes nowadays and no wonder you have managed to save so much. Good on you. Still, the health benefits are undoubtedly the best thing.
