There are plenty of cheap website builders for you to DIY.
This one has an e-commerce solution for a relatively cheap price: http://www.webmebuilder.com/

istockphoto offer opportunities for photographers. There are various criteria your photos have to meet to be posted on their site as stock for sale. Then you sit back and hope someone wants to use it. The website acts as an agent, so they will take some kind of cut from the fee that the user pays. They categorise photo types and styles so you should be able to see what kind of photos are most likely to be purchased.

It depends what it is. If it's topical, newsworthy and if it's of a celeb then tout it around the tabloids but be quick it will be hard to beat the pros at their own game (don't mean to pour water..). Best to try to take pictures to match criteria looked for by publications as you say. If I liked taking pics of birds for example I wd contact related mags and ask them. If you can retouch the picture that may be good selling point depending on subject matter. I used to buy pictures for publications and there are millions available on CD so personnally I can't see how you could compete in that market. However if you are really good at photography why not contact places in your local community e.g. schools, churches, bridal shops etc or leaflet your area and offer pics for people's websites, graduation, hen nites, birthdays. I've just had some taken and its expensive to have duplicated. Go into your local photographer and ask abt their service.

My friend at work has just set up his own website to sell his photographs but I think he is really good so it is probably not something you could do unless you have a real talent for it. I know he has also registered his images on a photo library but I don't know which one off the top of my head. If you are interested I can ask him when I am back in work. I know he sold one of his images for £375 the other week so it is a very good way to supplement your income.
