Does anyone have an opinion on buying glasses online?

Yes, don't do it from Wantlasses! Glasses direct are good and are on Quidco offering a high cashback too. I've never had any problems, I mainly wear lenses but when I buy frames I do so online. If they need tweaking I just pop into specsavers

I'd say it's worth balancing out the costs.

You can often get glasses for lower prices online, but to know which ones suit you it's best to try quite a few pairs on. Most websites selling glasses online are happy to send out trial frames, which you can test and return, but given that most also charge for this service (or at least expect you to pay postage) you can end up making things more expensive for yourself in the long run.

If you're not sure of exactly what you want, it's far easier to go in store - that way, even if something suits you but needs adjusting, you can get it 'made to measure'.

There are sites that once you are there you can download a picture of yourself and then put the spectacles on to see which suits you. As long your eye prescriton is up todate you should have no problem having the lenses put and the glasses fitted corectly.

I don't know....glasses are one of those things that I would always want to try on to see if they suited before I bought them. However, I suppose you could always go to an opticians first and find a pair you like and see if you can beat the price online!!

I completely agree with this process.

I have done the opposite (with glasses and other items). I find a good deal online and then go and check the product (and try it on if relevant, which would be in this case) in a store.

That way I know exactly what I am getting and don't make irrational purchases just because I am saving money online! (well, I used to and so I have learned from my mistakes now ;)

I always try out the glasses that I like in store after having my eyes tested and then get them cheaper online. I have saved a lot of money recently as my eyes seem to be deteriorating / I always seem to lose them once I have taken my glasses off!!

I used glasses direct for sunglasses which are an occasional wear and the deal was fantastic compared to opticians for something I don't wear all the time.

I have been very pleased with Budgetspex.com. I had several pairs of good frames so sent them off with my new prescription from the local optician (they are obliged to give you this)and received the reglazed specs back within a few days. Lenses seem fine (pretty standard prescription however).Saved loads of money compared to local optician.

I have bought glasses online and have seen the benefits in terms of price.
I don't like not being able to try on first so only use those companies that have high street opticians. For example I tried the Glasses in Tesco Opticians and bought them on their website a bit cheaper and free delivery to local store with an opticians.
Although what I did realise that although the glasses are cheaper online, the extras (tinting etc..) are more expensive online!

Excellent advice there.

The only problem with buying glasses online is who do you go to if they dont fit properly, most big stores are sellings glasses cheaper

Glad you asked this question as I did wonder about it. I have varifocals and wondered if I can get those on line. I was worried about whether the glasses would be as they should be and how you went about adjusting them if they needed it.

by Susancrane, 1 year ago

I would never do this as you can never be sure exactly what you are getting and you don't want to mess with your eyes. I like the personal service that I get from my optician and the fact that whenever my glasses get bent after being attacked by my kids, I take them in and he fixes them free of charge.

by scottie, 1 year ago

I'd agree with you all the way. Eyes are too precious to take any risks

by kensington143, 1 year ago

As long as you can provide a prescription then I can't see the problem, the only difference will probably be the price and if you are not satisfied then you can always return them.

It depends on how bad your vision is, and whether 'standard' glasses are appropriate. Personally I'd always go to an optician, and make sure they have made sure the glasses fit, and are right for you. Your eyes have to last you the rest of your life, so it is worth looking after them. It is amazing what can change (I've just had my prescription change fairly significantly, which explains the headaches an eye strain) and what bits of advice can be helpful, just by talking to an optician. Some things it is ok to skimp on, but if you have any doubts don't skimp on this.
