I have just been reading an article about saving money at restaraunts by bringing your own bottle? Has any one tried this and do they charge you a corkage fee or anything?

Some restaurants positively encourage it by advertising the fact, those don't charge you anything. As for others, you could ask them when you make your booking.

Thank you, Hayley, for choosing my answer. We have a couple of restaurants in my local town who let you BYO for free. Hope you find one near you.

When we held a private party at a local restaurant that doesn't normally BYO, I negotiated with them when booking and brought my own sparkling wine for a toast, at a nominal corkage. You can always ask - and you can always go elsewhere if you don't like the answer!

Many years ago (about 25!!) a new restaurant opened in Didsbury. They didn't have a license to sell alcohol, so you could take your own and not get charged corkage. I've never heard of it since then, but I'm sure you'd be charged something if only to help cover the washing up of the glasses.

Yeah I'm sure they will find a way to charge us....

I certainly haven't seen any place in London where they advertise this as an option or encourage it. I would find difficult to believe that this is the case when it is only recently when they have come to accept that ordering tap water instead of bottled one is ok, and you still get 'the look' in some places because of it or even charge for it!

It has been advertised on this site under their deals page. Am definatly going to try it, but will ring first!

Yeah, I had seen that and wondered about it. I will definitely do a search on it and see what I find but I have the feeling that it will be almost impossible to find places that operate this way in London, don't know. Will update this if I find something interesting.

I found a good directory of BYO restaurants here. I am surprised, there seems to be many! http://www.wine-pages.com/food/byoblist.shtml#london

I have actually been to a Indian and a Italian resturants where you can take your own bottles . Its a good idea especially if you dont drink or drive. It also saves arguments about who had what to drink when the bill comes. It works very well

I go to a couple of Indian resturants near BT Tower in london and they don't charge. (Actually I didn't take my own but they said we could and there isn't a charge) There is also a lebonese resturant near edgware road that I noticed but haven't tried. I just did a quick search and there appear to be lots more. I might try it out a lot more too.!

I recall eating in a Lebanese in Malaga and the wine was expensive, about 17 euros for the house red. It was very very good though. And the food was awesome.
